We are really excited about the coming 18th
Annual Shark Bay Fishing Fiesta being held between the 12th
May 2012 in Denham hosted by the Shark Bay Fishing Club. It’s the biggest event in Shark Bay and is a not for profit event, as all money is donated back into the community, in the form of the fish cleaning tables, local Silverchain facility, Royal Flying Doctors and St John’s Ambulance!!!
It’s a week long event held in a big marquee, in a fenced off area on the foreshore (Knight Terrace) in Denham. Alcohol is available for purchase at the event, as well as nightly meals while you enjoy the entertainment which includes bands, comedians, quiz nights, bingo nights, movie nights etc etc.
There is no accommodation at the venue offered as it’s on the foreshore. There are plenty of holiday houses, 3 caravan parks, apartments etc on offer and the majority are within walking distance of the foreshore as we are only a small town.
Registrations start the 12th of May at 12.00pm Saturday lunch time, and in the past it has cost each fisher $30 to register, and an additional/optional $10 if you are interested in registering your boat and all its crew in the overall boat prize. Your will be given a goodie bag full of the Department of Fisheries information (as there are special size limits for Pink Snapper in Shark Bay), the latest fish ruler guide, the 2012 Fishing Fiesta program which includes rules, species prize categories, weights of the previous year’s winners etc, the local Volunteer Marine Rescue details and much much more. Plenty of ready material and maybe even a few goodies such as lollies! This competition is open to all recreational fishers, with lots of different events for Ladies, Gents and Juniors of all ages with various fishing categories to suit beach, boat or jetty anglers. It's fun to participate in and it's fun to watch.
Normally that same day a representative from The Department of Transport will inspect your boat, its safety gear, expiry dates etc, and offer a prize to the best presented boat. Hint hint…… in the past winners have nicely laminated skippers tickets etc in a folder with recorded dates of when epirbs expire etc. Last year however, the representatives inspected the boats throughtout the week on the water, so it may happen again for 2012 but you will be told at registration.
There is a debriefing later that night at the marquee by Fisheries, the local VMR etc and is followed by a band to rock the night away. Now it’s time to head out fishing!
Sunday is the market day, so if you are interested in having a stall at the marquee you are more than welcome and the ladies really enjoy this day. The kids fishing competition is held on the jetty roughly between 11am – 1pm and is followed by kid’s activities workshops.
Fish can be weighed in daily between 5 – 6.30pm (to be confirmed) and only the HEAVIEST fish per category is awarded points. There are 17 fish species categories (see attached) so one fisher can obtain 170 points a day. In other words if you catch 3 Spanish Flag’s, bring in the heaviest one for weigh in as you are only awarded 10 points for that category not 30 because you have 3. If you are unsure which is the heaviest, by all means bring them all in! If you’re a flyfisherman, even better, we have a category for flyfishing so bring along your gear and land that big one! Normally there is a big crowd watching the weigh ins every day, especially if the weather permits!
The prize presentations are held on the last night followed by an auction, fireworks and a band. Please note if you are unable to stay until the finale, we will contact you and organise the delivery of your prize should you win.
Lastly, we welcome anyone interested in sponsoring the event. Your advert will be placed in the events program, promotional material will be displayed around the marquee and also all sponsorship is verbally announced continually throughout the week over the PA system by the master of ceremonies.
