Fishing Tips for Kids this Holidays

With Spring in the air, and kids off school - why not take the opportunity to take them fishing? You know that fishing is way more fun than hiding inside on the Playstation, but convincing your kids of the fact isn't easy! Luckily, we've got five great tips to help you get them out of the house, and enjoying the sunshine with a rod in their hand and a smile on their face. Be ready to pounce. If the kids show any interest in heading out the door, get right on it! Even if you've just made plans for the day, you haven't yet had a coffee or the house is a pig-sty - don't worry about it, drop everything. Take them fishing NOW! One moments hesitation and they'll pick up the TV remote, and it's over. Convince them that you're going to catch dinner. The idea of catching your own dinner really appeals to kids, especially those who have never done it before. Even if you only catch a couple of whiting, fillet them and cook them up for a snack, the kids will love it! Oh, and don't make them touch the gooey bits if they don't want to. Buy them their own gear. Kids rods can be found for under $20 at any outdoors store, or even local department stores. There's even pink ones for the girls! Trying to wield a full size rod doesn't make the experience great for kids, and besides, kids hate sharing! Stay local. Three hours drive offshore in the boat might be your idea of a good time, but they're going to be bored after 5 minutes. Head to the local jetty, or stick inshore to target the easy biters like Whiting and Bream. Don't let them get cold, sunburnt or dehydrated. All of which are bad things for kids, and if they associate fishing with shivering, they'll never want to go. Be 'that Mum/Dad' and insist they put clothes on and drink water. They'll thank you. One day... Maybe...
