Luderitz Speed Challenge 2015

Nothing grows in Luderitz, it's too windy!!!

In a little less than one months time, the worlds fastest kiteboarders will descend upon the little town of Luderitz in Namibia, for the 2015 Chris Benz Luderitz Speed Challenge. 2015 is the year they say; the year that a kiteboarder will snatch back the world speed record from the Vestas Sailrocket 2. In 2010 Rob Douglas used a tiny little Cabrinha and a custom made board to set what was then a world speed sailing record of 55.65 knots. He did it in Luderitz too, in front of his fellow speedsters at the Luderitz Speed Challenge. Then, 2012 saw the multi million dollar technological marvel that was the Vestas Sail Rocket. First reaching 59.37 knots, it was thought that the 60 knot barrier would never be broken, perhaps due to some kind of phenomenon not yet known to man. Later that week however, the Sail Rocket 2 blew that theory out of the water setting a whopping 65.45 knot benchmark, which was a whole lot higher than kiteboarders could reach while standing on their tip-toes... 2013, like 2014, saw conditions ranging from terrible, to less-than-optimal for the event, and the 65.45 knot record still stands. With a month-long window to work with, and some serious cash behind the event thanks to sponsor Chris Benz (the watch makers, not the fashion designers), Ozone and more, 2015 might just be the year that kiteboarders add to the 11 World records already set in Luderitz.
