W.A. BOYS BOMB OUT IN BRAZIL QUARTER-FINALS - 26thApril 2008
By John Roberson
Fremantle
skipper Torvar Mirsky and his Western Australian crew bombed out at the
quarter-final stage for the Brazil Sailing Cup, going down 2 - 0 to
America's Cup skipper Paolo Cian.
Indeed it seems that age and
guile have scored over youth and enthusiasm in all the quarter-final
matches at the Brazilian event, being sailed in Vitoria, north of Rio
de Janeiro.
Cian, an Italian who skippered South Africa's Team
Shosholoza at last year's America's Cup in Valencia, has been on the
international sailing scene since 1978, when he was first invited to
join the Italian National Team in the optimist dinghy class.
Other
quarter-final winners were, current world champion Ian Williams and his
Team Pindar of Britain, Magnus Holmberg, skipper of Sweden's Victory
Challenge for the America's Cup, and Bjorn Hansen, another Swede who
has been on the international circuit for more than 10 years.
orvar
and his crew of Graeme Spence, Tudur Owen, Kinley Fowler and Matty
Adams, can still finish fifth in this event, which will keep them in the
top ten on the world rankings, which is essential if they are to
continue to receive invitations to the world's top events.
