Danny Ching wins Race The Lake of the Sky

Race the Lake of the Sky - No Prize Money! Just the view...
One of the USA’s most picturesque stand up paddling locations played host to a unique race this weekend, the Race the Lake of the Sky.

With the incredible views of Lake Tahoe as a backdrop, some of the worlds best stand up paddlers got down to business in a 5 mile Battle of the Paddle style race, a 14 mile endurance run and team relay paddles.

Attracting more than 260 entrants, the five mile ‘El Dorado’ course was by far the event favorite, although that number does combine prone paddlers and stand up paddle boards. Danny Ching won the SUP division, in the 14’ class of course. Nineteen year old, Javier Jiménez followed him closely to lose by only a minute and a bit, then Cyril Burguiere crossed the line in third. In the ladies fleet, it was event favourite Candice Appleby in first, Shae Foudy in second and Anik Wild in third.

But! Before you get too hung up on the results, this event has a difference! Gone are the days of giving the guys more prize money than the girls, because at the ‘Race the Lake of the Sky’ event, there isn’t any prize money at all!

Done to keep the event accessible to all, this family based race attracted some big names last year, and again this year to cement its position as one of the highest profile Stand up paddling events in the world, including those with thousands of dollars on offer! Add to that the incredible views, the impeccably run event and fierce but friendly competition, you can be sure to hear about the Race the Lake of the Sky event in the Stand Up Paddling world for many years to come…
