Downwinding in Cape Town

Downwinding in Big Bay - Always Windy!
We hear about South Africa in the kiteboarding world all the time, but it’s pretty rare to find a SUP film with the iconic Table Mountain in the background. Especially not one as epic as this!

It’s well known that making a good sports video requires at least a couple of different camera angles. Count all the different ones in this video and you’ll be astounded at where they’ve thought to put cameras. Can you work out how they got those sweeping aerial shots? They’re from a kiteboarder! The wake left on the water gives it away, and it does prove that they’re good for something…

Also good, is the South African trade winds which never fail to deliver. For downwinders, the run from Capetown to the north is hard to beat. Big bay is well known for producing huge swell and winds in excess of 40 knots on a regular basis. There’s also a convenient road that runs right down the coastline the entire way. What more could you ask for? A shuttle service you say? They've got one of those too.

Spot the cameo from Kiteboarding legend Kevin Langaree (it’s not hard, his name flashes up). This ex-world tour leader has been into quite a bit of stand up paddling with his sponsors Naish lately. He’s done the flat water thing, the surfing and now the downwinder. Could he be switching camps?

Probably not, but Peter Peterson who published this amazing video isn't going to be giving up the SUP game anytime soon, saying: “Another cracking summer downwind in Cape Town, South Africa. 30knot runners with Chris Bertish, Ethan Koopmans and friends. This is what it is like 15-20days a month from October to March!”

Watch out for more SUP action from South Africa as the stoke surrounding the sport is just getting started. Expect big things!
