The ingredients for the worlds most high tech sandwich

You won't find any bread in this Sandwich! Just carbon and some pretty chewy foam pieces. Luckily; these sangers aren't for eating...

A carbon board is a carbon board is a carbon board right? Starboard don't agree, and to demonstrate they've taken to impersonating the TV show Iron Chef, where two chefs battle it out to cook the same dish on one table. How they go about it is always different, and so is the way these two construct a mockup of a carbon stand up paddle board.

Carbon isn't just for looks, the structural integrity and rigidity of the fibre make it an ideal tool for making lightweight stand up paddle boards. But the placement of each fibre, and the foam used to separate the layers might mean the different between your next board looking more like a banana, and less like a race board. The Starboard 'Sandwich' is built up from several layers of composite material, including a thin wooden layer in the high impact zones, doubled up carbon on the rails and thin layers of PVC to further increase rigidity. When they compare it to conventional 'Carbon SUP' construction techniques, the different is plain to see.

Watch this amusing and highly educational spoof of the TV Show Iron Chef below, where the team from Starboard SUP demonstrate their construction technique for the 2016 Race line of stand up paddle boards.
