Inspired By Nature

Barry Spanier explains his quest for aerodynamic perfection.

MauiSails team riders can rest assured that their sail designer, Barry Spanier, has been studying the ultimate wing in order to produce the perfect windsurfing sails. In fact, Spanier has been inspired for over 25 years now by an owl's wing which Fred Haywood found and brought to his loft in the mid eighties.

If you head over to the MauiSails site by following this link HERE, you can read all about how Spanier gets some of his ideas from nature and then tries to replicate them through his designs. There's also a short video of him explaining the concept.

Perhaps with the advent of new materials and further studies of natural perfection, we may see riders such as Josh Angulo (Angulo, MauiSails, DaKine), Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (Exocet, MauiSails) and Peter Volwater (F2, MauiSails) racing on some very special gear this season.
