Very interesting program. My only question is how long do the lithium batteries last? I know there is a 10 year guarantee., but wouldn't they become less efficient as they age?

My tip is to buy lithium shares today.

or Vanadium ore shares

As I said, if all the solar power panels currently installed in Australia were hooked up to battery storage we could practically switch off coal today for everything except remote aluminium production.

Check the numbers before you talk rubbish. Solar PV provides a little over 1% of Australian electricity.

That's about 2 power stations worth

Yeah. Micro Solar PV is already cheaper electricity for new builds than retail coal and will become even cheaper as people start installing storage technologies. Coal is already out of the game strategically. It's only still there while solar and battery storage gets to critical capacity for 100% base load. Adelaide is already 100% base load solar PV on a sunny summer's day.

As I said, if all the solar power panels currently installed in Australia were hooked up to battery storage we could practically switch off coal today for everything except remote aluminium production.

We could start writing a eulogy for coal fired electricity. I'm sure someone attached to coal like p train can find just the right words.

I love your enthusiasm and obviously hope you are right that we can rid the planet of this filthy coal addiction.... but....I seriously doubt your numbers.

A big movement away from coal-fired and towards gas-fired seems a likelier progression for cleaner energy then that will be followed - hopefully - by completely renewable and clean alternatives.

This will take decades.

Yes it's good to be enthusiastic, but we're only sea breeze after all, there's sure too be folks in the energy game who've looked into the economics and new technologies a lot more closely than us. They don't seem to be writing coal off yet. It'd be wise to get off coal, but I just can't see the coal industry as being full of blinkered, stupid people shuffling deck chairs on a sinking ship.

If you believe Greenpeace coal consumption is down by 4% this year from last year.

If you believe the Mineral Council of Australia it's rising.

Here's a breakdown of plants under construction or approved for construction. From the mineral council of Australia's website. No mention of AGW of course.

"
According to the international Energy Agency, the world will use 1 billion tonnes more coal in 2019 than today – more than 9 billion tonnes a year.19 There is more coal-fired electricity capacity in the investment pipeline than any other fuel (Figure 1).20 "

The coal industry can put out any information they wish.
Even they base the increase in consumption mostly on "poor countries" with people who can barely scratch to coins together.
It ain't going to happen anything like they say it will.

The west will be gradually dumping the use of coal for power generation.
We are the ones that use soooo much electricity, not the poor nations.

Ask someone in any of the major cities in China if they want more choking pollution than they currently have.
A mate who has been to India many times just came back and couldn't believe how much worse the air pollution was this time.
His lungs just couldn't cope with all the crap in the air.
Deaths in both countries out of control due to air pollution.

So nomadic tribes in Africa are going to take up the slack?
