Hello guys, I recently picked a 13M 2013 Edge and I've been learning how to get the maximum height on this kite. My local spot is mainly flat water, so no decent kickers available. And I can hold it up to mid 20's knts. I get regularly 4-5m boosts but I'd like to get a little higher than that and I'm convinced that it's possible. I know this kite has a very dedicated group of followers with much experience on it, so if anyone out there has any small tip or advice on how to improve I'd appreciate it.

get a smaller ozone edge and go out in 25+ knots for boosting, 13 m won’t get you much height due to its slow turning but more so the ‘floating feeling’ when coming back down. With a smaller kite you can work it more and get maximum height.

You must be powered up l ride my 13 metre in 25 gusting 30 knots at 105kg.Board speed helps but is not critical. l have had 8 metre boosts at half speed.
When you are about to send the kite try positioning your kite between 10 and 11 0 clock.
Edge your board hard for maximum line tension turn kite to 12 o clock fast and redirect your kite quick.
Keep you kite directly above you until you are coming down and about to land.

If you have too much board speed timing and edging is harder to get right.
Sending your kite from too low pulls you off your edge resulting in a low long jump.

Lots of wind is right. Go out on a smaller edge in 20+ knots and you go high. My 10 edge kicks the arse if my 13 20+ knots.

Dolphins is wrong when he says board speed is not critical. It is absolutely critical. The fastest you can go while still being able to load and pop will give you max height. Edges love speed. The faster, better, higher, more.

So to go faster and still be able to edge you will have to look at your board. A smaller board that will hold more power will get you higher.

Lastly. Go and find some kickers. If you want height a wave lip will spit you up way higher than any flat water jump all other factors being equal.

^^^Plummet is right, board speed is critical, faster = higher. The smaller size Edges boost biggest and the best is from 7M to 10M, Board size is critical too, smaller is better for boosting.
Ride fast, hold your edge and just before you send it from about 10 o'clock'ish edge extra hard and try to point even higher while holding in the bar and turning back as hard as possible.
The new Edge V8 has much better turning, keen to see some people boosting on the Edge V8 in 25+ knots.

... I hope this isn't a thread hijack but.... what is the difference to last years Edge to the Version 8? They kind of look the same, have they made it a touch more Freeride, in what way did they make it turn better?

Hey mate

I have a quiver of 2013 Ozones (9m, 11m, 13m edges & Zephyr) and hit the scales at over 100kg.
I found the following 2 posts very helpful when learning to get the most out of my edges.
As far as boosting goes, definitely the 9m and 11m get me higher than the 13m, but sometimes it all comes together and you still can get scary high on the 13m on a good day

And in particular Rusty' post - edge specific, this works for me;
www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Kitesurfing/Review/2013-edge-range/

"boosting on an edge is a bit different to a lot of other kites..with the majority of kites they can be throwen from quite low and once you get it heading in the right direction you can just pull in on the bar and up you go...I have tried to discribe what i do below, being 100kgs i have no trouble holding an edge and as i have mentioned heaps of times already the being able to hold your edge with your board is quite critical to getting the best out of and Ozone edge when free riding or in the surf.

So i hope the explanation helps..... position the kite beteen 10:30 and 11oclock....try to have the bar fully out and build tension in the lines using your edge..... pick you spot to boost .. a little wave or if in the flat look at the spot you gonna start from .. build speed and line tension ..when you hit you spot .. turn the kite agreesively to between 12 and 1 oclock.... dont let it go past this point and leave the kite facing that direction.... as you throw the kite edge hard up wind..... when you feel yourself about to be lifted from the water push hard on your back foot..... the bar is still fully out at this stage... as you lift into the jump and start to slow ... pull in on the bar.... when you get to the top of the jump start to gradually turn the kit forward .... then at the last couple of meters pull hard on the bar with your front hand and point downwind and presto... smooth landing....

Things that stuff up a jump
not holding an edge... your board flattens out and you get pull sideways and loose the tension in the lines.

Throwing the kite from to low ..... results in low jump and a big downwind loss of ground.
Similar result from throwing the kite to far . and its impossible to land nice.

Turning the kite to slow.... lack of height.

pulling to early on the bar.... lose the ability to get extra lift from the speed you build in the kite and lack of hang time....

Turning the kite forward to soon..... lack of hangtime.

Keys to success
Got to be aggressive.... leave the bar out and only pull in once you are airborn... build as much tension as you can before you boost without losing your edge....start the kite quite high and dont throw it to far past about 1 o'clock....leave the kite facing back until you start to drop... and very slowly start to turn the forward then dive agressivey late ......

hope this helps"

I've had 4 of these kites and still have the 13m. They boost easily.

You really don't have to go fast, it can help but it depends how windy it is. If you go too fast then it's hard to edge against it enough.

You want to be really overpowered with no depower. Put the bar right out and edge as hard as you can until you feel like you're gonna lose your rail then drive the kite up as sharp as possible and pull the bar in. Try and time it for a gust and if you hit a small wave also then it will be insane.

The kite will out jump everyone else out there when you dial it in.

I agree the smaller ones boost better. Not sure if they go any higher but the pull can be much faster.
