Hi kiters,
me and 7 other kiters have kited the moon on Lizard Island in the Blue Lagoon.
It was an amazing feeling kiting into the moonlight. The water just seems like one big floating carpet.
We attached glow sticks(thanx to Army) to wingtips and centre of the LE as well as to the board (in case u loose it) and the kiters.
Worked out perfect.
Everybody loved it as it was a special and unique experience.
Looking forward to kite the moon again...
Any ideas or expereinces would be appreciated!

Hi, I have also done some full moon kiting at some beaches with a few mates. there are a few things you should know.
1) Attach glow sticks to your board, so if you lose it, you can find it
2) Sharks are attracted to glowing things zooming along in the water, glow sticks are a great way to catch sea creatures

Hey nice work. Sounds awesome. Just had an idea - you could attach a red glowstic to the left hand leadiing edge (port) and a green one (starbord) to the right hand leading edge (or yourself for that matter) if there were a few of you out and it might make it easier to work out which direction the other person is travelling? might keep the law abiding types happier as well though daresay not a problem at lizard.
I wouldn't go out to far or stay in the water for too long!

I'd put it in the same league as guys who go out kite surfing in an approaching hurricane/cyclone/storm, or who kitesurf with a direct onshore wind, or who just dont care if they ruin the sport by killing themselves or ecouraging others to kill/cripplethemselves.
At this rate, 10 years from now we will all need pilot licenses to kitesurf (as wth hang-gliding) because of the idiots who promote these sorts of stupid pranks as "cool" until a few lives are lost and the public demands regulation.

I deleted it.
Whilst groper rigging and self launching in a dog exercise area with people walking and dogs going nuts, then walking across the paddock climbing over a fence and stomping through a nature reserve to kite in a banned kiting area annoyed me the deleted post had no love.

@ myusernam, this is what we have done- red port, green starboard and white centre. worked out good as u cld always tell where the kite/kiter was.
@sandgroper your comment is just rediculous but i guess you will be asleep by the time we go out kiting in the moon or are you afraid of the dark mate?
The risks are not much greater than kiting in daylight and comparing it with kiting in hurricanes or cyclones its a different ball game dude!!
Go spread your propaganda elsewhere!

Sand Gropper, get a life
Why do you kite in the first place?, it is way too dangerous, you should stay home and surf the internet for porn, it is much safer and you won't offend any member of the public 
A bunch of people experience something very special, do it at night when it is not affecting anyone else, in conditions that are no more dangerous than standard kiting, did i miss something, how can you write a negative post?
Maybe you are jealous  , I certainly am so count me in if anyone has a couple of spare glow sticks!!!! |

Skippers ticket - introduced after a drunk dude in a trawer killed a kid in a dinghy.

Have to go with Sandgroper on this one, killjoys yes but the apparent dangers are obvious !
Don't know Lizard Island and it may be isolated but just because we know where our lines and stuff are doesn't mean that other water users do.
I spoke recently with a marine compliance officer who was saying that if we are riding after official dusk ( the time listed in the paper that day ) we must cary lights. So therefore night kiting is illegal- I think this is Sandgropers point and a valid one...

Speaking of illegal - its illegal to water ski after sunset - lights or no lights.
Methinks it would be easy to make a small amendment to the relevant maritime statute to make it also illegal to kitesurf after sunset. That way, when one of these clowns kills/injures themselves we can point out that they were already doing an illegal activity and therefore introducing a KiteSurfers ticket is not going to help. The US gun lobby use this arguement very effectively - most gun murderers use illegal weapons - but kitesurfing at night has to be made illegal first.
I'm off to my local politician.....

THe bottom line is : If someone does have an accident, will you see them face down in the water in the dark ? Probably not. 
If someone does get into trouble you are forcing would be rescuers to begin a search in the dark. They will love that !
I am sure the first thing you will get is a dressing down about going out in the dark by any coast guard effecting a rescue.
GLOWSTICKS may work well on a kite in the air but you will not see a glow stick at water level at night from 80m on a flat day add 1ft of chop and that cuts down to about 10m depending on your own elevation.
Remember the guy at BOndi on TV?......... well how do you guys feel about being on TV because if someone in your group does get lost or is killed and you guys were out in the dark you are going to get bagged for it. Even the people who are currently condoning your actions will turn on you pretty quickly. Do you fancy doing an interview like a rabbit in the headlights in your wetsuit on the beach in the dark whilst boats and helicopters search for your mate.
Sorry to be the killjoy I have been out at night before and it is fun but the dangers are magnified and any incident will reflect poorly on the kiting community as a whole.

I think you will find that they are also require you to display port and starboard lights as well. My Thundercat is 4.1m and requires all three lights by law to operate at night.

Wasnt the sun going down, below the horizon you the last to come in, in the dark?
Wasn't it you who rigged and self launched on the dog exercise area in Attadale?
Wasn't it you who walked across the said exercise area kite in the air climbed the fence stomped through the nature strip and kited in the nature reserve?
I like that you lead by example and are such an exemplary kiting citizen that you can take the moral high ground.

A fine example of self regulation there rellie.
Its a pity that people cant just mind their own business.
The unlikely, but worst possible consequence for kiting generally of a night kiting mishap will be a ban on night kiting. Where is the sense in getting it banned because one day it might be banned. 
May as well do the same for daylight kiting.

Asailing vessel under 7meters is only required to carry a white light or torch to indicate to another vessel to prevent colision no port or starboard lighting required I know this for a fact! Isnt a thundercat a powered vessel that would explain lighting requirements. This is for qld waters

It is a powered vessel so you are possibly right about the lights for a rowing boat not too sure about yachts though.
actually I am sure they do as 6.9m is approx 22 ft and I can guarantee a boat of 22ft does require port and starboard lights when operating ( power or sail ) as well as moring lights when at anchor.
Well at least as far as I am aware ! I am open to correction.

Qld Coxswain I can garantee you dont need port and starboard light on a sailing vessel under 7meters plus I just Made sure on the rules in my manuals!
