Bored waiting for the wind to get its ass in gear so got to thinking of places that are hyped as great kiting spots but have failed to deliver..
my recent example was a trip to Corronations, Im new to WA and the way peeps from Europe talk about this place you'd think it was the best wave spot in the world, my experience was a sea weed swamp with feable waves and angry German windsurfers, I left feeling that I had wasted a session back at one of many quality Geraldton spots.......

Over Christmas, had the best kite of my life there. Double head sets, 300m rides.
Different days different expirences

Sandgate - the ****test kite spot ever yet everyone hypes it up as Brisbane's best place to go for a kite. Oh wait - it actually is.

When I was in Mui Ne last year, I found myself pining for Sandgate!!! Believe it or not, that's true. So I guess I must be saying I think Mui Ne is overrated!! But there were great spots over there to be had still... Oh but then when I got back to Sandgate it took me a few sessions before I could tolerate the brown water again - now what can I say, the mud works wonders for my skin!! (Except after a sewage spill) I love my local!!

Wellington point, Queensland. Ridiculously ****, dont bother going there.

Lol yes the leading edge of my kite is still stained a nice poo brown/red mud colour from my one and only session at Wellington Point, in 2007! though i guess, it will always be the situation of "one mans trash, is another's treasure".

Most overrated spot..
Has to be Botany Bay.
If you don't get killed by the stupid amounts of stupid people you'll surely die later from the water.
Most under-rated spot is a secret.. otherwise it wouldn't be under-rated.

No it is the best place to learn in Brisbane to kite.

Awesome, feck off somewhere else, one less tourist for the locals to deal with.
Sandgate has it's ups and downs. Best for 20 minute period at about 1/4 up from low low tide if you want high speed runs in super-flat water. Have to be able to handle <10cm deep though.
High tide is a washing machine for the desperate only.
But seriously, everywhere has some pros and cons. Surf up or down the coast? Great till you drop your kite in front of a decent wave and can't release cos you're under another wave being tumbled. Come thru and your kite's in two. Got a lift cos anything but a downwinder's unrealistic if there's any kind of sweep (9/10 times).
Gold Coast broadie? Faaaaark wanna spend every second looking over your shoulder for that 45ft bertram that's approaching at 30kts? Or the other shoulder for the 15 jet skiers coming the other way?
WA? Freezing bloody water, flies all over you, and great if you like 35kts and are prepared to drive 1300kms to Exmouth. Like tgcp, I found some of the hyped beaches a stinking seaweed pit. Had some amazing sessions round Monkey Mia to Exmouth tho. Perth was a zoo worth avoiding, and watch your back every 2nd post is about cars being broken into or gear stolen off the beach.
Mui Ne? Brown water like Sandgate, ****ty bay chop that's too big to ignore and too small to surf, days of no wind, syringes on the beaches, and beginners going downwind thru huge packs of euros in 25kts and big swell when it's on. Way overrated to me and I spent nearly a month there.
Cape Town? Fkin fantastic, but give me a dry suit please. 8 degree water makes you instantly numb. Kinda takes some of the 'summer fun in boardies' feel out of it.
Yada yada yada, anyway to recap Sandgate sucks, don't come here go to Wello, just make sure you wear booties and rig below the tide line.

most overrated- tarifa. but the nightlife and beach scenery make up for the crap riding conditions.
|
|
|
I will give Tarifa a vote for the most over rated, Ive heard so many peoples horror stories of going there for learn to kitesurf holidays...tere are some seriously underrated spots very neardy though ;-)

Wa like Queensland is a big place man, bigger than ex mouth or Perth. But agree with you on the Perth scene, Damn.

When the conditions are right, it's hard to beat Double Island Point. Flat huge lagoon and surf around the corner. Not far away and Inskip Point can be amazing. Little further north and you hit Hervey Bay and then Elliott Heads. It's all just a bit far for most Brissie kiters and the 4WD access to DI puts off many Sunny Coast kiters. Keeps the crowds away nicely

Most overrated spot has to be Seabreeze Kitesurfing General Forum.
Bunch of West Australians telling everyone to piss off because WA is awesome rad man dude, then in the next sentence (well if they could use sentence structure) moaning about noobs, crowding, licenses, schools, each other, the wind, thieves, euros, tourists, car drivers, bad grammer and just about everything else.
Most Underrated spot - under my bed, where I am now hiding to to avoid the wrath of the West Austrailians

I just locked the front door.
