I have just come across a topic in one of the 'Other' Vic Forums talking about changes to the boating zones in Vic. There are some changes that will impact on areas, (assuming we are abiding by the rules) including Bon Beach, Watkins reserve (new no boating zone) and Gnotuck St. I haven't checked any others Regions.

Below is a link to the Parks Vic update. The site includes a link to a survey for public feedback. I suggest you have a
look and respond if you feel you will be impacted or would otherwise like to secure our access to current zones.

The survey closes on the 16th of December.

Thanks for the heads up smithy .

This is a typically clunky rezoning for aspendale and I assume the other beaches you listed that we should at least all try to influence to accommodate Kiters that have been using the area for years .

Strictly speaking they argue swimmers need easy parking and public transport access and therefore need a swimming only zone near these access points to accommodate that. As though other users don't need the same access especially considering the gear we need to carry. Yet they acknowledge windy days are not good swimming days anyway but still they will make it illegal to kite exactly where we kite on the most fun days especially when it is more or less on shore.

Yes probably there will be nobody policing it on windy days but why allow them to put in a badly thought through attempt to solve a problem that actually solves one problem (to accomodate crowded sunny low wind summer days) and creates another problem ( dividing the kiting zone in half so you can't kite parallel to the beach playing with the fun waves on windy especially on shore days)?

Come on Kiters you can voice your protest at the links smithy has given you and we might be able to prevent this going through or at least make the zones suggested only apply on low wind weekend days (eg with a flag system or something like what he surf lifesavers do in summer). You only have a few more days to do this.

Not sure what is going on in Aspendale maybe they want to put in a swimming zone, but most beaches have a 5 knot rule so kitesurfing is not prohibited. Just not sure why there is such a big cry-out when Sydney all local beaches except botany bay, kitesurfing is completely banned.

Yes I did fill out the survey.

PS. They did the same thing to Hampton but people still kite outside the zoned area north of the LSC.

Done.

HighzKite the issue is they chip away at access piece by piece, if they don't receive resistance where does it stop?

Well for once you may want to thank the windsurfing community then, as I believe they will make a strong submission for increasing the Hampton area not that I kite there much. Put simply there are a lot more swimmers, nippers, families, clubbies & concerned citizens who outnumber us 1000:1. Who do think they are going to listen to?

But if you want to fight bureaucracy then go for it. You could always play the discrimination card.

It's unfortunate that the windsurfers didn't seem to want to include the kiteboarders to increase their numbers, they seemed to feel we might tarnish their proposal, as once a long time windsurfer, it's a bit sad that many still feel that way.

Unfortunately kitesurfing is not allowed at most of the Sydney beaches, with a few notable exceptions- Narrabeen, Long Reef and North Cronulla. There is also some possibility for local surf lifesavers to allow kiting at the Bra on empty days. So, not all beaches, and not completely, but yes protect your spots!
