I have been using 15lb Dynema Spectra Fishing Line as sewing thread in my cheap domestic sewing machine.
It is available via eBay in a range of colours in 300, 500 and 1000 metre rolls. Cost for 1000 metres is about $22 including postage to Aussie. The 15lb size easily fits common sewing machine needles and is a breeze to use. Previously I had bought the heaviest size Polyester sewing thread at $3.50 for 30metres per reel and it is nowhere near as strong as the stranded Spectra. Comes from China of course.
Hi Paul. I used eBay and entered "Dyneema Spectra Fishing Line". There are many sites to pick from, prices vary, most have free delivery and a large range of colours, strength and lengths. Obviously the bigger the spool the cheaper/metre, hence buy in 1000m reels. I've used the stuff for years as fishing line as being multi-stranded it is hard to shred and is very thin compared to mono fishing line. Quite dear from a sports fishing shop.
Have a new Mini almost done, looking how to fit a brake and then I'll post some pictures...wok
Wok, not being a worm drowned, I have to ask, does the polyethylene braided line surfer from uv degradation? ...... Mick.
Can't say about it's life other than I have used in on a light fishing rod for about 3 years now and it is still not showing signs of breakdown other than it has changed colour from original bright yellow to a lighter shade, no sign of stray strands coming away. I think the colour change is due to a resin binder washing off. I hand stitched two long lengths of Shadecloth together at the start of summer here and it has also faded but looks in good order ready for next summer I have reloaded all my reels with the spectra now.....wok
Thanks Wok, I have been looking for a source of thread for leather horse harness, and this seemed brilliant, it seems the waxed thread sold. By the trade is so special it is sold by the inch.
That's good, hope it works for you. It would be easy to run off a long length onto a spool and run it through a block of candle wax or similar, makes it very slippery for sewing. When I bought my last lot I had several sizes, viz 15lb, 24lb and 80lb break strain. They all cost the same $12.98 each for 300metres. Don't know how they worked that out.....w
