Look at the shadows, outlines, and where the skipper is looking. I know what I think

I say photoshopped. The sun is IMO fairly low at about 30deg off the port bow, judging by the shadow that the luff of the genoa casts onto the leach. The whale is aft of the port stay but casts the (photoshopped) shadow lining up with port stay. Therefore the sun must be port side and aft of the beam, also high in the sky as it doesn't cast any shade onto the boomcover. Just my opinion though.

Mind you I reckon the boat looks like it has done a few rounds with a whale or maybe sledge hammer.

Have seen the "after" shot of the boat and it does look a mess. Still think that this one has been photoshopped for effect. If you had the camera pointing at the boat just as the whale breached then surely you would keep shooting and have some shots of the whale thrashing about on the dismasted boat. I think they may just happened to have taken a shot of the boat sailing along. Then some time later the event occured and the photographer came back and photographed the dismasted boat. Still convinced photo 1 is photoshopped.

I work quite extensively in the graphic industry, and teach and use photoshop most of my days...... sorry guys but this looks RIDGY DIDGE from the small photo i have seen. I'd be interested to see some with a higher resolution to confirm or deny its authenticity. But IMO its real.

I reckon it's as real as this one of me tow-in surfing at Lancelin a few years back..... ....I've seen report of video floating around, but have not seen the proof. Looking at the sun location, shadow on boat - particulalry wrt whale size & location, it's fake...

Hmmm. You gotta ask yourself why?? why claim a whale landed on your yacht? why is the top of the yacht so damaged? why go to all this effort? all points to if it smells like Sheet it probably is Sheet. Still think its real though.

Yes but we are not denying that the whale crashed into the boat, I have no doubts as to the authenticity of the after shots with the mast down. I just think that the photo of the whale broaching alongside the boat is a fake. If you are camera ready to shoot a broaching whale you are going to shoot the whole sequence not just one photo. And you have to explain the angle of the sun coming from two directions to claim authenticity of this one first shot.

Mmmmhhhhh.... INteresting video. Much harder to pick that one. So it could be the obvious - The story is true, just that the whale photo is obviously fake.
