Hi, I am new to SUPing and I bought a new board that I have used about 6 times. Because we are (Family as well...) still getting the hang of it, we have only used it in very calm waters.

But now the board looks like it is allowing water in and the laminate is starting rise. Can anyone offer there thoughts on what has failed with the board, how I can fix it and any recommendations for someone near the Freo area that can help me fix the problem?

Any help really appreciated
Thanks

Hi Dazz

I can't offer you any help on why your board has done this.
But as for repairs try a guy name Barnaby on 0481185499. He's based just out of Rockingham.
Really top bloke to deal with.

Unless you have damaged the board yourself , then it is a warranty repair. It will be covered under warranty so just take it back to where you bought it.

I have shown the photos to the supplier of the board (From down South West) and he believes the cause is because I have damaged the board. I believe there must be a flaw in the board because we have been very careful with it. So now I am trying to get a bit more clued up on how this may have happened to the board and at the same time get in contact with someone local who can fix it...

Photos can never really tell the whole story but I can't see anywhere in those pics that would indicate some form of impact or crushing force. I will be blunt here and mention that these budget boards are budget for a reason.

Looks like the board has failed, you should pursue the warranty a bit further.

It must be repaired. There definitely looks like there is water entry, and the wood will get quite damaged fast (it will enlarge and delaminate, black mold will set in, ...)

If you cannot find a crack nearby (running your nails on the board do not "catch") it is probably a manufacturing defect, a "pinhole", ultra-small holes left because of a bad glassing.

You can look for pinholes by putting your board in the sun with a layer of soapy water on the suspected area. Bubbles will show the pinholes as the board warms up. Do not leave the board more than 5mn in the sun however.

Pinholes are 100% a manufacturer defect. Any damage from you should have left a visible crack, with the glass whitened like a spider web around the crack.
The bad news is that, if this is a pinhole, there may be others in less visible places, where the water damage is slowly eating your board under the paint or the pad.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.

I have visited a local SUP supplier and they have also suggested the board quality is low. So, with no supplier support, I am now continuing to dry the board out so I can start a repair. Hopefully I have no problems after this fix. BrisKites probably called it spot on. And for me it is a Buyer Beware situation...

from the pics, it seems that there is, in fact, a penetration of the the skin of the board---looks like a slit of the type one gets from an impact with the paddle blade---if that's the case, it's tough to blame to baord build---whatever the case, youll want to open up that slit a bit and dry the board very well---then execute a good repair, using glass layering, etc

Yeah, it looks like that may have happened. If this impact did happen, it was not excessive. So, I feel it is unreasonable for the slit to occur. Specially, when I discussed the robustness of other boards with a Perth SUP school instructor. The board was handled with kitten gloves (to the point my wife was giving me **** about the fuss I was making over it...:)) so for the board to be so fragile is disappointing.

Also, thanks for your advice on considering to open up the slit because I have been trying to dry it out for days and it is very slow and I was thinking it need to be opened up in some way...

Cheers

the board has definetly water damage due to a crack or pin hole. as briskites said u get what u pay for and with buget boards it is only time before this happens. the stain now is permanate. time to update to a quality brand. check out next level sups over your way for a deal
