I have got my mind set on the 9.6 Hokua ..@ 170 litre .coming off the mana. 10' ..is 20 litre enough of a drop in size at a time ...I think the shape of the 9.6 Hokua ..will be the difference .
what do most people drop at a time ..?.?in their progress .?i have a hold on one ..

I don't reckon . If its for surfing and your not over 100 kg you should look round 150 ltrs at most . If your lighter , go even less. Otherwise you may grow out of it to quickly. Anyway depends how keen you are and how you want to progress. Have ago while your young and fit enough.

I think yes.. I've gone from a 10' Mana to a 9'5" Mana with the 9'5" being the smallest Mana that 'I' can paddle.. I also have a 9'1" X32 Hokua that is also the smallest Hokua that 'I' can paddle.. If you are coming from a 10' Mana I think the 9'6" Hokua would be the right choice.. The different shape makes a huge difference.. IMO.

Hey,

I started out on a Naish Mana 9'5 @170L? then dropped to a 9' Hokua @125L then dropped to a LSD 8'5 @110L and then a Fanatic 8'5 ProWave @109L and now on a 7'4x27.75" Minion 104L. I have finally hit my volume threshold at 104L and have got a bigger 130L board for choppy conditions. The biggest drops are at the beginning and then less at you get down to the waterline in terms of volume v weight. Width is a more important criteria than volume to factor in. I am 82kg and 40-mumble.

I'm 96 kg ..I'm keen ..surfed a lot also windsurf..I want a lip basher also for cut backs ..odd floater etc .mana 10 doesn't like doing it. But does slowly .i guess the smaller I go the more radical you can get ..I'm leaning toward the 9.1 .@150 litres ..I shouldn't really be worried about it ,as the 9.1 is rated to carry a 109 kg person, but the 9. 6 has the same weight rating ?stuffed if I know.in windsurfing terms a 40 litre drop is massive .thanks for the input .

Thanks DJ ...I think I might end up with two boards here .but the 10' mana will have to go .i do like to surf a bigger board sometimes and the 170 could be it.... .is having two wave boards too much ...? I think not .

Thanks stev0 ..I like the 40 - mumble ... One thing in the Hokua s favour is the 32 width .

41 and 93kg and full hooded wetsuit I can paddle a Starboard Pro 8.5 (112l) when the conditions are clean. When it isnt I prever my AB8.8 with 123l. With that board I can paddleany seastate, but they are rather stable for there siz .I f you are a Naish guy The X8.8 with 140l is a nice one. It feels smaller as the size suggests.

i went from my ALLWAVE 9´6¨ 170 liters (by that time 105 kg) to my actual hokua 9´5¨ 140 liters (loss 30 kg also, now 75-80)

It was very doable and the hokua was a game changer, excellent surf board!!! Now dropping again to the Hypernut 105 liters (have to wait till september to a review)

I think that 140 liters and the 9´5 hokua is an excellent choice for "surfability", stability and comfort in choppy windy days. That board cand handle big waves (3 meters faces, at least big for me) with 12 second periods, easily.

It´s forgiving, has good glide and is a wave catching machine.

If you are going to drop, 30-40 liters is a good number, anything less than that and you will want to go smaller in a few sessions.

my recomendation..push your limits a Little more.

20 liters in 190/170 and you will not feel the difference. Go a Little more smaller. 140/150 YES YOU CAN!!

Well I surprised myself ..had a go on a friends 9.0 Gerry Lopez surftech board must of been only about 100-120 litres ..it didn't say on the bottom ..he didnt know either ..he was only 74 kg ..I could only just paddle it .most of the time on the knees ..managed to catch 4 waves ...it was loose and made me relies short and small is better ...but it was way too small for my 95 kgs .it also was only 30.5 wide ..what a rocker ...i think the 150 litre and 32 wide .hokua ..could be the answer ...for me ...he also had a rear wing fin on the back ..didn't like it for cut backs lifted the rear ..end ..you need it to dig in .thanks for the input and ideas ... Yes I can do it if you want to get rad ...get a rad board.no demos in my area .just try everybody else's .
