Hi,
I was looking for a SUP for small mushy waves and after reading many forum threads I came to the conclusion that a Hokua x32 or a JP Surf Wide would be suitable for me (72kg, no wave sup experience, but windsurf and surf experience). Unfortunately it's hard to find any of these second hand where I live. I found a Naish Mana 8.10 though. Can anyone tell how the Mana surfs different from the other mentioned boards?
Thanks!

I know both of these boards and unless you're surfing sucky beachbreak waves I'd recomend the 8'10" Mana.. It has more glide and speed but demo first if you can to check stability for you but I'm guessing at your weight the Mana should be fine.

What size x32 ..?
and what size wave ? And mush.....the mana as DJ Says has more glide and easier to catch waves ...
but at 30.5 wide it will be slightly more unstable in mush ..but at 72 kgs .your a light weight ..and you will handle it
if it was me I would try a 9.5 .mana or the 9.6 or 9.1 x32 ..but I'm going through a mid life weight crisis now 98 kgs ..

if you read what naish says about the boards ...the x32 will be more of a throw around board ...it has heaps more rocker .but I thought they where awesome in mush ...the 9.1 was my favourite ..the 8.8 for me was just too slow to catch waves ...but does rip it up .

what kind of surfer are you?? catch and ride .......or cut backs and lip bashing ..?

Can't comment on the other boards but can say the JP is a really fun stable board which turns on a dime. Perfect for average waves.

Hey, thanks for all the replies! I should have been more detailed. I live in Germany and want to use it in the Baltic and North Sea when there are some waves left after the wind died. The conditions I want to use the board look like on the picture below. Sometimes I go to Klitm?ller in Denmark where the waves are a bit better.

I have been proposed to take a JP Surf Wide 8.8 or Hokua x32 8.8, but then I found the Mana 8.10 on Ebay.

(since I live in a city apartment with limited storage space, 8.2 would be better, but that's another question...)

Edit: cut backs and lip bashing is what I like to do...

Do not take a JP Surf or Hokua. For your waves you need something compact (wide nose & tail), with a fast rocker and not too long for storage:
==> a mini-longboard shape or a "Tomo" shape.

In the Naish line, a Raptor.
In the JP line a slate
In the Starboard line, an HyperNut
In Fanatic Line, a Stubby
In the Gong line, a Mob, or a 8'0 NFA
etc... you get the idea. Something less than 8'4" will be enough.

Thanks Colas,

I thought those Tomo shapes are more for experts, don't they?

Interesting thread.
I have both, the Mana 8'10" and the 8'8" Hokua x32LE.
While the X32 is alot of fun and easy to turn in mush or decent waves, it's harder to catch the waves; I find myself hanging out in the impact zone with the shortboard surfers to catch the waves. This may be due to the extreme rocker, the curvy outline and the narrow, sharper nose. It tracks slower than the Mana 8'10", but is more responsive in turning.
The Mana paddles straighter and faster and catches waves easier, so, my wave count goes up on it. To turn, you have to put your rear foot into it whereas, with the X32, I just think and it turns. Despite the width difference, I find them both reasonably stabile until it gets real choppy.
Planning to buy a new board and have been debating on which of these 2 to sell. Currently, I am advertising the X32 on Craigslist. I'm in San Diego where I surf mostly beachies.

Hi
i am 80kgs, north east coast UK, North Sea surfer.

I ride a 8'6 hypernut, it's a really stable board in chop, wind, currents.
It is really fun on wave, can throw it around, and easy to store.
Paddles ok on to a wave, I like it's stabililty in rough conditions which means I can spin it quick to position on wave with out falling off.
The 7'8 might be the board for you, I'm looking at getting one for glass days.
Construction and weight is good in starlight.

Just ts an idea for a chuckable board.

I think Tardy also nailed it here. It depends on what you also want to do on wave. If you like some glide I assume short boards like the Hypernut, Shroom, Stubby, Skate , Raptor will not be pleasant. The Mana or similar would be more versatile or even something like a larger Speeed or the longer Hypernut
or Nut

I would recommend the 8 8 JP surf wide in those waves ...if you can't use a longboard! It is what I have.

Colas is getting mixed up with the JP surf which is for good waves with more punch...lots of rocker. The JP Surf wide is a diff beast totally....flat rocker and lots of width in the nose....wide tail which is also important.....very fish like. I catch plenty on it in weaker swell. It also goes fine in bigger stuff.

Can't comment on the others

Slab, witch construction version do you have? Is this the AST? Is the weight ok? And do you think I could get away with the 8.2? Or would I lose a lot a planing compared to the 8.8?

I strongly recommend you try the jimmy Lewis super frank 8'6 32 wide. I absolutely love mine. Super strong and between 6-7 kgs. It catches waves easily and is super loose.

They are for experts if you undersize them. But experts can undersize them a lot because this kind of shape is so much stabler than a regular shape. For my 100kg, a 105 liters "Tomo" is much stabler than a 115 liters regular board of the same width. If you take one sized for your weight and level, you will discover insanely stable AND performing boards, that are ideal for intermediates.

These board can become tricky in powerful hollow waves, but it will not be a problem for you :-)

You should just not get too much under 8' in length if your paddling technique is not too good, in order to not have too much row effect.

Slab and Bowerboy, you just discovered how much a bit more nose width adds to the stability of a board, and performance on weak waves. Now imagine going to a shape with full on wide nose and tail, you will get tons more of it, and could reduce the length without issues.

In the Gong line that I know well (I am an ambassador), the JP Surf Wide or the JL Superfrank would be similar to the Cloud. I advise either something like a Mob (Tomo) or a NFA 8' (mini longboard, "egg"). You will lose a tad of paddling speed, but will gain stability and performance on weak/windy north sea waves.

I have the wood construction which is quite light. I am 90kg and the 8 8 is bang on for me so guess your weight is more suited to the smaller one.

I've surfed all and my choice would be the X32. Definitely has the most performance capabilities built in.

I still have not found one of the above mentioned boards second hand yet. I'm not in a hurry though since I have a new-born baby and priorities have shifted a little . However, there are some Fanatic Allwaves for sale where I live. How do they compare to the other boards?
