I just found this on Facebook. It might be too new but has anyone tried or seen them?www.facebook.com/Wave-Wing-SUP-Fin-132959330424959/
It caught my eye after that Kai Lenny foil video I guess.
I thought it was George Greenough and the tuna fish responsible for the basic surf fin as we know it. Prior to that mostly D fins??
The explanation video is so full of bovine excrements it is actually quite funny.
Any lift from the winglets will provide drag. The design of the starfin is made for crafts rolling to the side (sailboats, then surfboards) so that a winglet becomes vertical and compensates the tendency of the single fin (or sailboat keel) to "slip" with roll angle.
Note I had a Starfin on my 6'6" SUP nearly 5 years ago... (pic below)
The issue with it is that, depending on the tail rocker, the winglets would induce extreme drag if not properly aligned with the water flow. But with the proper angle, it is quite fun, you get a single fin that keep its bite in turns. Alas the vertical, "spitfire" shape is quite twitchy in turns...
I agree with Colas as I also have an old star fin that I have used on surfboards in the past but now I am testing on wave sups :-)
Yup, screw is in the back - most vertical edge is the front
(which is why they call it a Spitfire).
For me, it is hugely responsive like other pivot fins; however,
not too twitchy, more in control, I think because of the winglets.
