It's time for me to bite the bullet and sort something in my garage for the 10'2 x 35" widebody.
I'm trying to weigh up hard racks like thiswww.ebay.com.au/itm/1-SET-WHITE-STANDUP-PADDLE-BOARD-STORAGE-RACKS-SUP-RACKS-GARAGE-DISPLAY-RACKS-/221519229439?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item33939331ff
vs wall straps like thiswww.ebay.com.au/itm/STAND-UP-PADDLE-BOARD-SUP-STORAGE-RACK-STRAPS-1-SET-BOARD-PADDLE-/121127828599?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item1c33c7fc77
vs ceiling pulley system like thishttp://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Kayak-Hoist-Lift-Pulley-System-Ceiling-rack-Hook-Garage-rack-Storage-/281593928430?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item41904e5aee
My problem is that my wall is across the front of the cars, and space between door is approx 10', so wall racks involve the sup protruding 2" over a not often used garage back door, plus the fin at head high to be dodged when getting a coldie from the beer fridge (which happens fairly often).
Ceiling racks would work great but involve moving one or both cars out so the board can be suspended over their bonnets.
Both have drawbacks, but I literally have nowhere else indoors that it would fit.
It seems to me that the soft wall straps would be more of a pain than hard racks?
Any thoughts/experiences would help.
I've got those exact hard racks for my 11'2 x 36" Starboard and they work a treat. I put extra padding on them as i wasn't super happy with the stuff supplied – $5 down at Clark Rubber soon had me sorted. The paddle rack on them is also very handy i find… Super easy getting the board onto the wall too as there's no dicking around with trying to get non-rigid straps etc to fit.You mention the fin being at head height - don't know what fin(s) you're running - but with the Starboard i can have the board deck facing out and the fins don't hit the wall, but having said that, the stock centre fin on my board is only 170…
Hard racks - with extra padding - get my vote.
I have the ceiling pulley system for my 14' race board, works a treat but I do have to take the car out to raise/lower the board. I replaced the rope because the stuff they supply is garbage and I never got any straps to wrap around the board so I searched online and got some proper lifting strops used for lifting things with a crane. They are rated to over a tonne (a bit of overkill) but they are cheap to buy and you know that they won't break. Plus you can order them to length you want/need.
Thanks Todzilla good to know about the fin - mine is stock too but it might be slightly bigger, would probably fit though. But that got me thinking about how much the board will sit off the wall on the racks.
I've been back in the garage scratching around and I don't think it'll fit in front of the cars unless it's right up high, and with the board being 14kgs and my elbow being RS it might be too much of a struggle.
DJ - love your work but I don't have the end access due to panel door when fully lifted - I'd have to go across front of garage (over car bonnets).
I'm thinking the pulley system might have to do it, replace the rope and I might be able go get away with just shifting one car out. Thanks saJ.
I'm even thinking I could use some curved curtain track type thing, mount the pulleys on it so the whole lot travels, then I could lift/drop board straight, but store board sideways (across bonnets) or even drop it straight onto my car roof racks - with the panel door closed the pulley could temporarily encroach on the space the panel door needs to open.
