That looks a bit hairy - do you mind me asking what board you're on? Respect either way

Jp slate 7"2. Not an ideal board for the conditions but I found if I had my back foot right on the back inside corner I could make it work ok

Wind was ok but the current was psycho. Really hard to stay deep. The best waves I got were back-doored, probably 6 out of 25 waves. I had the craziest blisters on my hands that arvo (from paddling against the current!), still do in fact.

Copped two top-to-bottom, solid ten footers on the head after a wipeout and decided to call it a day. Those two waves HURT!

Those adrenaline's drops are the real goals of SUPing, taking off from positions you won't have it or stand it an other way.

What would you normally surf on those waves? Slate is more a smaller wave machine? Looks like it held well though...good surfing!

I would have thought a normal shape board better for those conditions. Any tomo style or mal shspe has more surface area out of the water catching wind

Small pintail would be ideal.

A mate rides a 7.4 x 24 in those size waves no problems and has a 7.4 x 27 for tough conditions. Both regular shape.

All above is outside my ability

Actually the parallel rails give a lot of stability at speed: you get the rail curvature of a longer board.

What is tricky is if you try to make tight turns in the hollow sections: then the wide tail may be problematic to sink properly on the rail to get some hold, and the rail-to-rail is harder: slower, and may "squirrell" in the transition. But holding the rail on the trim line on a steep face is actually enjoyable as the rail is very straight, no wobbling like with curved outlines that ask to be always turning.

Also chop & bumps hit harder.

This on my limited experience in some overhead sessions (not as big as the pics here!)...

I do need a quiver like this (7"4x24 and 7"4x27). I would have it by now except that I snapped two board this winter. I had to replace the boards I need the most not the guns or semi-guns I would have bought to complete the quiver. I'll be ready next winter.
