2016 Starboard Pro carbon @ $3699. WidePoint carbon @ $3499. joke.

SUP's at about $2500 are a bit expensive but surely Starboard are taking the piss?

I don't think comparing SUP boards to a Bicycle is fair comparison.

Bicycles have a larger markup than SUP's and those examples are extremely high end equipment..

Bicycles have many many mechanical parts to them that are costly to produce and assemble, a board on the other hand doesn't and that's why the comparing them is a invalid argument..

Bikes are a much bigger fashion accessorie and ego statement than SUP will ever be. They are very over priced but get away with it...

Will SUPs continue to get away with price increase etc....maybe but with very limited volume of sales

Unfortunately i think it will really hurt retailers. You will nearly be able to buy two custom boards for the price of one production board!

Having recently done the rounds of looking for a SUP I found HUGE differences in price, Full Circle on the Island had a Carbon 10'6 for $1400 and I nearly bought it on the spot. Most were around the $1500 mark but they were all heavy and bulky except for the Cocomesh NSP model, nearly bought that one too but it needs to look good for me!
Got the Naish and it was a bit more than I had planned on spending but when I tried it out it was the better board and you always get what you pay for and the carbon boards were way over $3k but they look better than the cheaper ones and you pay for a name and back up in everything in life not just SUPs. If your in that market you pay it as a pro if your not you can choose to buy what ever suits your budget and life style!

The boys in OZ that do customs like DC, Deep,DTM and Gulliver will be stoked as their custom price will look very competitive.

Some foam and $400 easily covering the carbon, enough for a 14 fter , doesnt add up to $3500 plus for surf sup no matter how much someone argues for it

Ps and thats buying the carbon locally

That is the sad fact. I feel sorry for the retailers.

Imagine if you could buy a custom car for half the price of a production model....there would be cool cars everywhere with everyone getting exactly what they want..

Yes that would be right but no one in Aus can manufacture them they have to send them offshore even custom boards, or is delamination of cheap sups a myth?
Either way they are made for a market that is willing to pay and the cheap ones are for another market as are middle of the range, it's no different to a Ferrari vs a Hyundai.

Why would you want a carbon surf SUP anyway. They are lifeless, corky and awful to surf in anything bigger than 2'....compared to a similar shape in a material that allows some flex. Save the carbon for the race boards that need a bit of stiffness

He's in Vic.. There's none that I know of in Melbourne.. One that I know of on the east coast and one that I know of on the west coast.. and they don't make many so it's a little risky..It's not quite like the Goldie..

I have Noticed that retailers are not stocking their shops with these expensive boards and starting to carry more affordable boards.
You can still order the top end but probably won't see a lot of them on display. I think the high cost of manufacturing may force a rethink on how these boards are made and the big three should start to look to companies like Sunova who make great looking boards without the shiny bells and whistles .

I would say deep are at the forefront of aussie surf sups.

and their latest range of 12,6 and 14 ft boards are right up there in the design front as anybody - here and os.

Flame suit on not a plug just a fact but JP Pros aren't carbon for just that reason it's a mix of composites to still allow flex...

It's Queensland, not Mars!
You can fly there in two hours or drive there in two days.
I'm talking to a custom builder on Gold Coast at the moment, no barrier to getting one built.
Also going custom makes you try to understand why / what you are building / buying, have some input to the shape, even if you have very limited knowledge.
And choose your colours / artwork.

I only know what I am told if that's wrong it's wrong but there are NO Aussie Sups on offer anywhere in Melbourne! All are made in China and Taiwan, they can design here but it is not worth the expense to produce GOOD ones here so they send it offshore. I was told it's not the same as building a surf board the technology and process is very different?

I was in Noosa a couple of weeks ago even lived there years ago but when I am looking to buy something I buy local to support local business, I could have gone online and bought one but I can't see, touch, feel what I am paying a lot of money for. You can't trial a sup online or talk about the differences in construction etc, I like talking to people!

I find that hard to believe no custom Sups in Vicco....some of the best shapers in Aus are there. Look a bit harder.

And talk to people. You might not be able to buy one off the shelf, but there are plenty who would build you one.
Or talk to interstate as suggested.

Not in Melbourne, but Torquay is 1hr away. Stonker can build to your specifications talk to Murray and they'll do it. I know Sparx also has a custom guy in the Ocean Grove area. Ask and you will receive. I've concentrated on surfing my custom Laguna Bay since my hip and back have really healed and loving the looseness as my body gets more fitness and flex. It's still a bit tippy but it turns on a dime. I love the feel of foam and fibreglass under my feet. Stonker are just behind Ripcurl OldDave. Go see, touch and feel what you're paying much less for. Go talk to Rasta in Barwon Heads he'll tell you about shapers in the OG, Lony, BH area.(and sell you a LB while he's at it) I just noticed this on FB worth a look. www.noosasurfworks.com.au I got my custom from them. I think they deliver to Vicco free if you wait for a truck thats coming down. Just trying to be helpful. I really liked what I saw at Stonker, but I must admit I like anything with fins that will float me. I love Deep, DC, DTM, ECS, Lahui Kai and on and on........
