I recently read an article in the Jan/Feb Smorgasboarder, "The power of one". It was about Geoff McCoy's design ideas, shaping a surfboard in which he calls the "dome" and using a single fin. The idea grabbed me! I like the movement of the boards from his postings on Youtube.
Currently I'm riding a PSH ripper 8'9" using it in the surf. I'm looking for a new board with a more classic ride.
Has anyone used this idea for a SUP? Was it successful? Downside/upsides? Can a SUP in surf handle a single fin?

| My short board is a 6'3 McCoy Astron Dot single fin,I added some tiny stabiliser fins to stop it occasionally sliding out in choppy surf,,,,other wise the concept would translate fine to SUP. |

Surfed a Laird 12'1 with a single fin and it was heaps of fun and you could almost camp on the nose when it locked in. At your weight Dive on the Laird you could pitch a tent.
Surfed the 12ft PSH Gun with a 10inch single and the 12'6 starby and both were great fun.
I have surfed the DC 9'4 swallow as a single and it was ordinary to say the least but you would expect that.
I have seen the Naish 9'0 x 26 surfed as a single and it rocks.
Try it you just might like it

I have had a few McCoy nuggets over the years. The ease of paddle is great, but funnily where I thought they would go well in fat waves because of the tail width, they actually didn't and need a good steep face to get them going. But others obviously love them.
With sups, the customs I have been doing up until now have been fishy in outline and wide in the tail. Thought I would follow the leaders and the one I am having done this week is very thinned out in the tail and rails, volume pushed forward. 805, x 28 Ask me in a week when it's finished if it's better or not. Mind you I have learnt we all look for different things in a board.
