Over the past 6 weeks some of the Roar / Quantum training crew have been cross training with OC6 at Outrigger Australia at Currumbin. I have to tell you what an excellent cross training tool OC6 has been for SUP racing Would highly recommend any SUP paddler to get themselves into an oc6 boat and feel the benefit. Some of the crew that have been cross training are Jake Jensen, Jacko, Steve Walker, Beau obrian, Alison Fullagar, & Myself. All trained by Peter & Sue Dorries in SUP and OC6. This weekend saw the Australian OC6 Titles on the Sunshine coast and we walked away with "Gold" medals in the following events, Open Mens 22km steered by Peter Dorries Open Mixed 16km steered by Joel (thankx for steering us rookies to GOLD mate) Youngs Gun Mens 16km steered by Peter Dorries Young Gun Womens 16km steered by young Keale Dorries! She is also into SUP now All the races we won were filled mostly of SUP Paddlers. Trust me when i say, get in a oc6 boat and feel it. Any paddling is good whether it be standing up or sitting down. Watching the Hawaiian's recently at the Quicksilver Paddle festival i was amazed at how well they can paddle anything!! And many oc6 paddlers can now also see the benefit of SUP training. XX angie

I'd have to second that. Paddling a solo craft is great but the feeling of battling other teams and the way you feel when other people in your boat are chomping at the bit and firing you up is a whole other thing. You do things you don't know you can.... I have paddled the past few seasons and raced regularly, this year has been a write off with a huge break in the middle of the best part of the season for me BUT I hope to be better placed next season.... Damn life and work getting in the way of fun. Edit: By the way, amazing results for a bunch of 'new' paddlers Ange and the Roar crew

Angie is spot on the money here - the OC6 training over the past couple of months has been excellent cross training for SUP. Would recommend it to anyone wanting to improve on technique and fitness. Huge thanks to Pete & Sue Dorries for coaching us, and Joel for steering us to victory in the Mixed race. Stoked with our results on the weekend! Also not forgetting Molly Walker, who has joined our SUP training group at the start this year (she's a weapon on a SUP and definitely one to watch out for in the near future) and was part of the gold medal winning Young Guns team. She will probably be able to verify that the SUP has helped the OC6 as much as the outrigger training has helped the rest of us!

What about dragon boat racing bit more accessible would that have a similar cross training effect. I've often thought of doing that...

Actually in the shire there are 3 OC clubs and I know ppl in 2 if you wanted to have a go the closest dragon boat club is StG as far as I know....... OC is good until they start dropping in at the bay surf, then its 14' v 30' (or how ever long they are)

Sorry guys I have to disagree. I paddle DB's for 3years and paddled on both sides of the boat. Some have a preference to paddle one side but you can mix it up.

Dragon boat and outrigger are very different , the outrigger stroke is very much like a Sup stroke , twisting and extension , swap sides every 10 strokes apx. Dragon boat is all one sided and a really short stroke (yes you can swap sides if you stop the boat and swap seats) , if you try to reach out or twist you will hit the person in front of you. As Angie said the outrigger is a great cross training for Sup and lots of fun especially out in the ocean again very similar to Sup , the Dragon boat is all sprint based , still be good for fitness but you will benefit more from the outrigger.

I think OC6's are a little thin on the ground down here in Vicco, although they're not completely unheard of and pop up in unexpected places http://breeze.weatherwise.com.au/forums/Stand-Up-Paddle/SUP/I-didnt-expect-to-see-this/?SearchTerms=OC6

If you are interested you can find your closest club at the AOCRA site below: https://aocra.com.au/index.php?page=find-my-club Edit; a simple check shows 3 different clubs on the East side of the Bay.
