| I would welcome any suggestions on a holiday destination for my non surfing wife and self somewhere not overly expensive for 8-10 days. I'm 58 yrs old, been surfing a 10' walden for 4 yrs. so have reasonable ability and fitness. Looking at canguu in Bali or perhaps Hawaii or Maldives but they all sound either too gnarly, too expensive or too kitsch. Just want a little easily accesible wave with a bit of other stuff to do when the wind or tide are'nt co-operating. Thank you |

I went to Oahu-Hawaii last Nov with a non-surfing partner. Brilliant. Yes its a little kitch and yes full of ozzies, but a great venue and not expensive. You can hire a board from a shop called Moku at Waikiki for a few days for around $80 US. The partner will enjoy the shops, restaurants and scenic drive all close to the main hotels and you can find a wave anywhere along teh Waikiki/ Diamond Head coast. Dont ask for a 'flat-white' coffee......they think its racist !! Note: Stay in a waikiki beach hotel, its worth the extra $$ and far better quality. Oitrigger Waikiki on te beach was great. Enjoy ! |

Nusa Dua in Bali during Oct - March. We stayed at the Grand Hyatt, misses will love it. Right on the beach and in front within a 100 -300 meter paddle are about 4 breaks (lefts and rights) that remind me of Waikiki. From super mellow to quite hollow depending on the tide. My 11yo had a ball on his SUP, while I was able to paddle another 600 meters and get waves twice the size if I wanted. Pretty much zero crowds even in January when we were there.
No driving, walk to either trendy shops (Bali Collection shopping mall) or a Bali type little village (two in fact). No bogan ozzies either, just surly Russians that are easy to ignore.
Balinese are super nice as well, plus you can rent a SUP from a couple of the guys that frequent this site if needed. Heaps of other stuff to do apart from surf.
I would go back tomorrow if I could. |

Merimbula. Look no further.
Keep your money at home. There are flat water lakes, friendly(ish) breaks, rivers to explore, Tathra oysters (mmmm) and the Bega cheese museum to torture the kids with. |
