Hi first post here so be gentle
so i am in the process of getting a custom Mctavish Noosa 66 board made, yes as the title states it is going to be 12ft yes 12.
i currently own a 9'1 - 9'6 - 10'4 and 11ft board so i am no stranger to big boards.
i want to make the glassing heavy real heavy but i have never felt a board anywhere near the specs im looking at
the heaviest glassing option available to me is
6oz + 2x 8 oz with a 8 or 6oz deck patch on the deck, 8oz and 6oz underneath
the board also will have a 1inch redwood cedar stringer.
now i am a big guy im 6'6 and 115kgs im not afraid of the board being heavy but im starting to wonder if this board will be stupidly heavy even for a strong guy like myself.
so i suppose my question is has anyone ever felt/owned a board with this type of glassing, any opinions appreciated thanks
Welcome the more takes the better imo
Yes I've owned aboard like yours but they called
it a stand up paddle board, real beast of a thing but
fun all the same.
That's one hell of a board you have on order, one inch
stringer
ha yer i also have a 12ft sup but even still my sup is epoxy.
nice lime and milk board too i saw that many times in the glassing rooms very cool design, i only live around the corner from mctavish spend alotta time there
Thanks mate and good to see new folks in here.We will be in town Wednesday and will ask for a lookie at your beast
its not in yet they are still waiting on the blank from burfords, they are gluing 2 1/2 inch stringers together
what is the heaviest glassed board you have ridden? how did you find it
I know I've been very tempted to get a 12' Munoz because I love the 10'6 so much and I'm sure it would go just as well. But they're epoxe and relatively light for their size.
I just can't imagine how a 66 would work done large because they don't really look to be a real quick turner.
don't think any epoxy sup is going to be as heavy as this sucker.
question- why
ps mac, even the bullet is only around 13 to 14 kg's. pretty bloody good effect considering the lenght and thickness of gods give to dw ing - the mighty 17'4 sic bullet
well because im a big guy, im tall, heavy im a front row forward with size 18 feet who likes to surf...physics would say i shouldn't be surfing
i want a big board that floats me like it floats the 70kg byron hippies i surf with, 2 paddles and there on to the slightest dribble i want to be able to do that
i asked Billy Mclean if anyone is familiar with his work at mctvish head laminator been doing it for 40 yrs or so.

but why does it have to be heavy or do you mean heavily glassed
Heavily glassed...althou a 1inch stringer aint going to be light either
why so heavy spaz....I have a 12 foot tandem board...I glassed it with double six ounce top and bottom with an extra strip down the centre top and bottom and another strip along both rails....it's a great thing to ride and if its inertia that your after, it has plenty....glides like silk...and turns well...I think the 1" cedar and an eight and six top and bottom would be more than enough....too much weight may work against you in a board that big...I think...anyway I'm sure the boys at Mct's will steer you the right way.
follow the lords footsteps my brother. you will not need glass when you love god. HE will always take care off your soul no matter what you do. so give your love to our saviour and everything will be great
Just because it's big, why must it be heavy
Your issue is early wave entry and to me, that means you need volume not weight, so every square inch of volume you have should be dedicated to floating you, not the board itself.
I recently borrowed a very heavily glassed board for a test, it was the Issac Fields model from Bennett's, it was so hard to pick up waves, I was reduced to catching whitewater and trying to ride out into the clean water, it was hopeless.
As I was getting out of the water to grab old faithful and go back in for a real surf, a buddy of mine was going in and he said something that will stick with me for a long time. He said he borrowed the same board and he also thought it was useless and he reckons that the reason it's called an Isaac Fields model is because he's the only one who can ride it.
That's when I realized that board weight may be a good thing for someone like Isaac who would be lucky to be 11 stone ring'n wet, but for a big bloke, it's just another burden to overcome.
I had a 12' Mickey Munoz a couple of years a go..great board wish I never sold it It was great for big paddle outs and caught waves with ease..I was looking at an 11' footer last year for the slow fat waves here, it didn't transpire but I do still think about getting a custom done...not as wide as those Munoz ones though!
Hi Spazz , we have a couple of guys over here with 12ft heavy glass jobs , both are getting pretty old I havn't riden them but have been offered suppose I should have , they are bloody heavey they carry them on there shoulders they say the drive is incredable .One was made by Steve Johnson (jinx)here in Gizzy . the other by Del surfboard in New Plymonth the owner of the jinx board has been riding a surf tech the same as mine latley don't know why if that tells you any thing
Too much time spent with pup give your self an upper cut chrispy
