Thanks for the post, really enjoyed everyone's thoughts on the area.
My family and I were there in early Jan this year and I'd made this video of our 2 days at The Pass (and board factories).
Hadn't made it to share, more a keepsake so apologies for the length as I know 2-3 mins is the attention span max for video clips but given it seems relevant here it is.
....I hope the GoPro footage captures the lineup for those who've not surfed there.
That was good fun. Good clips, enjoyed watching.
Had forgotten about the 'speed bumps' to negotiate on small days, but still a great wave.
Will be there in May. Looking forward to getting away.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks guys.
It doesn't show the 45min wait for a parking spot....everyone kept smiling though !
Mac, I'm sure you noted the McT quiver shots ?
Thanks guys.

Yep i really enjoy that. The parking would have been annoying at the pass. Luckily i didn't have that problem.
Thanks for sharing

5.54 is worth the watch !
Really good footage but jees that looks like an accident waiting to happen, far too busy, too many rookies, people swimming in the surf zone, such a shame that this break is ruined by over population. I would much rather surf half an hour drive away and have less crowd. Great spot in the world still really enjoyed the footage! Captures the essence of a stoked surf session! thanks
Thanks guys.

6.15 is fairly hectic too !
Luckily I caught the board heading toward me out of the corner of my eye and put my hand across my right eye and in what I can only call luck, caught the rail in the palm of my hand...could of ended so much worse.
The highlights in no order were catching my cousin's first wave on camera, watching Derek Hynd (although he was unpleasant in the lineup disappointingly), the line of arses on the lookout, catching an outside wave to myself, the vista's, Bec & I collecting new boards and generally just hanging out there.
The flip side was the crowds (of which I know I was part of), the swimmers in the surf break, the crazy parking situation and the lack of informed surfers and parents and the resulting dangers to others.
Mac, the blue / white board is a 9'1 X 22 1/2 X 3 1/8 Carabine which has had the nose snapped and put back together (ideal board for crowded breaks as there's no tears if it gets banged up) and the Orange is its replacement sans nose damage.
That flick out was atrocious
Where is that **** ever acceptable?
Lucky you were on your game SA. Good catch.
Great waves and Byron is a pretty place but That clip reminds me why I usually say pass to the pass. Absolute chaos..
Great stuff JB, stoked for ya
Thanks Mick, it seems i didn't miss any swell on this side
Love the place.
Just read the whole thread, was there in early September, crowds significant but not too bad.
Never crowded in the water where I was.
Wife and daughters loved the shops while I played on the beach.
Paying for parking starts at 8.00 am, so I was gone before I had to pay.
Maybe stopped at 4.00, but staying above the Pass and parking at Clarkes, no problem.
Kook on a SUP, so didn't venture to the Pass, shore break out the front of Clarkes kept me well amused.
The Pass looked significantly busy when we walked past, but lots of waves being caught, particularly by young girls on longboards.
Wattagoes looked like a nightmare with crowds, I drove up from Melbourne so had a bit more range than most in Byron.
No idea of wave quality, but Tallows, minutes away, deserted.
On a no surf day I paddled up past the Pass and got severely spooked by deep clear water, rocks, fish, etc.
Should not have looked at the surf report that mentioned " several large Great White Sharks in Byron and Ballina shires in the last 3 days"
When we went up to the lighthouse, more surfers at Tallows.
Will be back next year.

Nice work jb. I enjoyed that and I do enjoy peoples thoughts about places.
No worries, I'm glad i had the BBQ board there though or it may have not been as much fun, so thanks for that. Sorry i didn't manage any real footage. My kids got some video of me scooting by as they were playing, but nothing worth sharing
I'm kicking around Byron until Thursday. Avoiding the "name" spots. Went for an oggle at the temple of Mac (McTavish showroom) yesterday when I rolled into town.
Later went for a walk to Broken and sat to watch the waves a little Nth where I could see the beachbreaks out front and look down towards the point.
Ozzie Wright (alternative free surfer/artist type) turned up with a 6 person entourage to shoot video and stills. He was ridng a 5'6" (or so) twin keel fish sans legrope. He didn't lose that board once and was pulling 360s wherever he wanted and surfed the wave so fast with agility that it made everyone else in the water look....yawn. So that was entertaining.
Surfed Nth of town this am which was fun. At the parking lot there was a burnt out bus. Felt sorry for those who were on the receiving end of such a disaster. Talking to one of the locals he said that it had been there for 4 days already and the owners of the bus had been breaking into cars.
If that's true then maybe someone decided to deliver some instant karma.
I noticed all the local Byron guys have long hair and beards to the point where it must be hard to tell them apart.
"Bro. Oh man sorry bro, I thought you were bro but you're bro, bro."
I'm here til Thu, thank you very much.

Thats a hell of a walk from Byron
I didn't have a look at Broken head and I'm disappointed i didn't. I drove straight through from Lennox so it was a simple turn off
Oh well next time. The buss has seen better days
