Greetings. Please forgive me if I put a downer on what is a refreshingly positive thread, I just thought it was a good time to ask what is probably a stupid question. Why would a company that produces such a high qualilty product such as Mactavish put its name to the rubbish pumped out of the GSI factory. I got caught a couple of years ago when I walked out of surf shop with a nice new under my arm. It disintegrated due to the poor quality of its materials. I had never heard of GSI at the time and thought that a MacT was a MacT. Surely any profit made from mass production licencing is not worth the damage to the brand name.

I hope someone can answer your question Gwendy, because it does appear to be a peculiar dichotomy. On the one hand we're told that you're not a true surfer unless you support the local industry and our struggling shapers, glassers & retailers. Then we see so many shapers and surfers that are very happy to put their names to an asian board for a nice bit of superannuation. Money that I suspect they will not need to divy up with their workers back in Oz. If I were a cynical person, or the devils advocate I could say that the biggest complaint that the small local board makers have, is that they don't have their name on an asian popout. If I were to exercise a goodly amount of empathy, if could also say that an asian popout of a design is a good way for the masses in less fortunate, or less local places to get to enjoy a good design. As always, I sit upon a fence and wonder why my hemorrhoids are playing up again.

I could be very wrong here (Mac will confirm) but I'm sure I read a thread in here that Bob turned some of the business over or it was a corporate decision made to expand the empire so to speak a few years back. Now I am just a new to this but that was the reason I steered away from GSI ..... and I only support Oz shapers. Mac, enlighten us all mate, please Love those multi coloured rails The only rabbits I like are those you can shoot BTW Gwendy, cool avatar mate

Sorry guys, i bought a 9'6" GSI fireball and love it, $895 on special. It allows someone like me to surf a good board on a small budget. It may not last 10 years, so what. I would probably want a change in a few years anyhow. I reckon I've already had about 500 bucks fun on it, only 395 to go!

As dotcom mentioned,go to the site and click on the staff profile,it will give you an idea. McT is a massive brand world wide who employ the best of the best craftsmen. There is no way a smallish team could ever keep up with demand so to meet the world wide demand they hooked up with GSI, which allows the average punter to ride a fantastic designed board model.GSI are just as good if not better than any other pop out board although they did have some shaping issues at the beginning, one of the first GSI fireballs I saw had a different tail shape to the Byron made board. This issue has been addressed some time back. Each to there own on this one,no I'm not a GSI fan but can see why others would purchase them tho.Remember living in Australia we are spoilt for choice when it come to surfboard shapers,we have the best in the world unlike so many other countries.

So of my two scenarios, the latter (good boards for the masses) may be the most appropriate. No matter how good they are, I'm hopeful that I wil live out my days without the need to give Mr McTavish any of my hard earned. The reason for that will never be discussed on this forum, but perhaps around a camp fire over a cup of tea would be a more appropriate forum.
