With 6-8" waves due tomorrow in Sth Oz, with strong offshores, thought I'd check with you blokes on bigger wave longboards like McTavish G2, MC mal guns etc. Don't want to take McT cruiser out as at 10' would be a handful; Billy Tolhurst Surftech too light & wide in nose for offshores; McCoy 9'2" allround my usual board in these conditons. What do you all ride when surf gets up? No shortboard guns- I'm 53 and need early wave entry!
Eight foot....the only thing I would be charging is my camera
I guess any big gun would work. Saw a beautiful blank for one yesterday, 9'3 x? X 3 1/4 was for super big wa.... Now tow ins needed with that beast
Yeah 6-8' is relative- having just got back from WA where Margaret River was big, windy with no-one out, and was more wave than I'd be game to take on, 6-8' Middleton is still a sloping non-barreling wave but great fun none the less (if you can get out the back!)- big open faces- great for long carving turns- sitting so far out that people are specks on the shore.Much less intimidating than most waves at that size.Only comparable wave I've ridden would be Torquay/Haystacks. The blank you have described is close to my McCoy allrounder- 9'2" ×23"× 3 1/4" 17" nose and rounded pin tail. Gets in super early but can get a bit bouncy.
^ ... That's my favorite stick when it gets kinda big... 9'0... Weighs about 7.5kg. Not too heavy, not too light... Lovely 1 inch thick redwood stringer...
Beautiful board Simondo- any model name? Tint or spray? Love to know the story behind this beauty......
Tints (of course!)... It's hand shaped by Bob McTavish. It's a cross between the G2, and The Speed Shape... Wide Point is Neutral on G2, and Wide Point is well forward on the Speed Shape.
There's a Black Resin Glue-Up on the Stringer, so the stringer has 2 very thin black lines down each side... Looks sweet!
Old man's guns- priceless!!! Dimensions on this one arkgee? Love the look of a quad on a gun.
9'0" x 21" x 3"....solid balsa rails and 6 + 6 +6 laminate give it some weight for those strong offshores daveBasher
old man guns...way to go...Bobs not the only one who can do them.
I've got wood
Yes, very nice Arkgee!
I know plenty of people that rave about Quads on big wave boards!
(Even though my preference is 1+2!... But that's the great thing about surfing, everyone has different thoughts on things, both the surfers, and shapers!... and as a shaper, if the customer wants a quad, they get a quad!).
