Apparently it mangled a yank surfers arm.It won't get publicity because its bad for tourism, plants of Noah's are sighted there and there was another bite in 2012.

Ahh soz sounds like a simple no go when Balian is muddy then...& on the bright side, no disrespect intended but some mangling sure beats losing limbs & death

Just spoken to a friend who lives there. Interesting day that's for sure.

The Bulls were pretty thick there six weeks ago after we had some heavy rain. First morning after the rain the water was like choc-milk and icy, we had a solid one cruise around us for a look just before sunrise with another couple of instances of feeling water movement that shouldn't have been there. Vis was less than a foot.
Next morning was patches of iced choc milk shot through with warm patches, schools of mullet everywhere and lots of very active Bulls. Saw four or five full on breaches with Noah's fully airborne and bait flying everywhere and lots of swirls and bait getting smashed. Vis was still less than a foot, it's no wonder people get hit there.

Good waves but.

Jeez Smicko. That is just plain scary. I hate surfing in murky water. I was trying find more news when i stumbled on this clip. It kinda shows the water quality we are talking about. It pans around to some surfers after a minute or so and at the end the shark seems to be cruising back that way (It says 'attack' but it's not...)

Murky water pfffft , more to the point of a river mouth being a food chain. That's like saying don't surf overcast days on a seal Island.

They're not attacks like we get Rod, just accidental really. If you saw the water you'd dig it, vis of a foot or less and big schools of bait. It's bound to happen. There's a few spots throughout the lineup where they seem to be most active and you make a conscious effort not to paddle through there, if you do you do it calmly, without making a commotion. I'm actually amazed that there's not more incidents the way kooks flounder around like an epileptic in a bathtub in the rip at the end of the left, that section there is Bull shark ambush heaven.

They really are just exploratory bites not repeated, sustained attacks where the victim is consumed, like we cop. I actually felt safer out there with Bulls smashing bait schools and going full ICBM than I do surfing Wedge or down south. Or Rotto. Or Lano.
It's kinda like being in the water at Exy, you know they're there, you can see them feeding but you don't really feel threatened.

I get what your saying, but My point is they have still been kept out of the media to avoid a negative on tourism.

Not at all man, Google shark attack Balian and you'll get a heap of hits. They've all been pretty minor injuries so there's no reason to expect it to make international news. If it had been a couple of fatals followed by another few attacks over a couple of years you could expect mass hysteria. But one little love bite a year with the amount of surfing hours spent there per annum is nothing to get excited about.

JB - these attacks are well talked about all over Indo. Balian is well known as a place to avoid at certain times. Almost impossible to keep anything like this under raps these days with social media etc

Far call, I've not really seen or heard anything, TBH i can even remember seeing a headline something about "Bali and no attacks" but thats just from memory and thats not getting so reliable these days. I don't really spend any time their either so i cant comment from that point so thanks for commenting Mick and Ted..

Sharks in Bali don't scare me anywhere near as much as the water it self and the health issues it can cause.

Lets hope the young guy is okay.

Where did that other post go? I wanted to re look at it on the laptop !

Hey JB - nothing to worry about - there are loads of issues in Indo - from pollution to water quality to housing to sharks to political issues to drinking water to sewage and storm water to governance to corruption to health etc When you look at that list - its not too dissimilar to the issues here in Oz - just a different scale and more likely that you are more aware of them as you live here. I can assure you that a lot of people are well aware of the Indo risks - they are happy to take them on as the waves are so so good. Same with Oz - lots of people are annoyed with how things work here at times - but heaps of people still live here and choose to travel here for holidays. Look at the Goldie to Ballina area or your SW corner of WA - both have had shark incidents - have you noticed a dramatic drop off in surfers?

After the Bali bombings there was hardly a surfer insight - I surfed Kuta Reef by myself for 4 days straight a few weeks afterward ! ! ! Unheard of now. Even when its 2 foot there are more people out there than your Perf beachies Surfing populations in Indo have gone ballistic since the bombings. Not many predicted that in the weeks after those events. Its only going to get worse. Its on everyones bucket list.

Balian is ideal Bull Shark Habitat and reports of bites have been reported there for well over 30 years, its just we don't here about tit over here.

Other paces where the river meets the sea with the estaurine quality salt/fresh water mix is usually rife with Bull sharks and there's quite a few in Indo but Balian has more visitation than the other spots so the recording of the events is better captured so its better known for it accordingly. There's been accounts of Bull Shark bites in Sulawesi, Java, Lombok also,as well as Green Balls that im aware of. Green Balls about 20 years ago there were 3 bites in two weeks apparently (could be a myth?)

All That aside though, i love Balian, great wave, not worried about Bullsharks as much as i worry about the potential of picking up Hep-A. If you were what goes into that river a little further up the catchment ....eeeewwww

Not sure if mine was the missing post you mention above Ted, but anyway...

This bloke's account from a few years ago has a link to pics taken in surgery after he was bitten at Balian: http://www.roadtripofalifetime.com/blogs/my-recollections-of-the-shark-attack

Not bad paddling into a wave, surfing it in before passing out.. I guess he figured he'd be out of the water for some time so may as well make the best of it

It the story it says he surfed it all the way in, he even made the comment to his dad what a great wave it was. I guess i took that as he stood and surfed, but yeah you could also be right and he just bellied it..

I like to think he was a champ and stood, i can see him belting along with his arm is pieces

haha fair enough mate

I was just thinking these journalists don't know wtf they are talking about or try to sensationalize everything. Hey maybe he did...but if he came in & passed out he must have been reasonably injured...Adrenalin can allow you to do amazing stuff though, like people turning cars on their side to help save people caught beneath. And then I guess shock could of kicked in & he passed out. Maybe coming in he thought he was safer standing, not trawling his feet behind for another bite
