Hi guys and girls,
I've just got results back and have a complete tear of my ACL. Has anyone been through this and have any tips to make the whole process of getting back in the water easier and faster? Surgery may be a while off due to my lack of private health cover.... Any tips or shared experience appreciated..

My condolences. That sucks. I'm 3 months in after a grade 3 MCL and ACL tear. My surgeon has suggested trying to avoid surgery for the ACL, and the physio was pretty confident I would be ok. I am in the midst of physio and exercises, trying to do all the strengthening to build back wasted muscles and avoid surgery. But frankly, I have no real confidence in my knee yet and no where near back in the water. If I can't get the stability and confidence back in my knee soon, I'm up for ACL reconstruction. My surgeon says for ACL reconstruction "back to competitive sport 9-12 months after surgery". If I go down this path, I will take the advice of my surgeon, physio and what I feel in my knee before going back in the water. I'd hate to go through this again by trying too early and redoing the injury.

My advice is, make sure you get the right advice on YOUR treatment. But if surgery is on the cards, get it done ASAP, so you can start the long journey to recovery.

This has to be the most depressing injury I've ever had... :(

1. Get private health insurance.
2. Get income protection insurance.
3. Go to the physio under a friends name and get exercises and more advice.
4. Get a cti knee brace.
I waited 10 months and then went to surgen for mri and diagnosis. During this time i surfed and kited (strapless) as normal (1 month off water after injury). Even had 7 week surf trip without incident. Do squats etc religiously. I seriously considered not even having op. Always a risk of further injury however, my pyhsio said that up to me and said as long as other supporting myscles are strong ahould be small risk.

After surgery 6 months out of water apart from sup. No further issues. Hamstring has torn though (as 1/3) missing as now acl).

also known as fraud.
If the physio gets busted, and they will because someone will talk, they'd have a hard time proving that they didn't know it was you. They'll never work again.

I've torn the acl in both knees. No private cover so didn't get the recon on either. It takes ages to get the strength back but I surf, windsurf etc no worries. The best knee brace is duct tape. Makes your knees feel bulletproof

Reconstructed ACL and PCL took me about 3 years after the second one....

A Repair Surgery for ACL injuries involves rebuilding or repairing the ligament tear.ACL repair surgery uses a graft to change the ligament. Read For More Information related to ACL Repair Surgeryhttp://www.dramrajani.com/Knee/ACL-tear-Reconstruction.htm

I agree

Not sure surgery is always needed a friend of mine who's one of the top windsurfers on the wa coast still goes huge in the surf.Took a year or two to get back on form though.
Still feel totally inadequate when I sail with him.
