Well have got myself some gear and decided to get back into it after a break of about 20 years. Was a reasonably competent sailor back then so I'm hoping it won't take to long to get my confidence back. Was wondering if others here have done something similar and how did they go

Welcome back !
I did the same.
Depending on what gear you bought , the new stuff is great.
Compared to stuff of old , the newer wider floatier boards are great for getting back into it.
They are stable , fast and still easy to turn.
Youll love it and there is some good cheapish gear out there.

Welcome back matey. Had my comeback two years ago and it's arguably been the best thing I've ever done! Get yourself a GPS device as it brings a whole new dimension into the sport.

I have bought JP allride 116 and some second hand tushingham sails. Will mainly be sailing at Melville

I'm in the process of doing the same thing after the same length break. The main difference and probably my mistake is buying the same gear I finished on because my allocated budget from the minister of finance and war is very limited. Have only had one blast and nothing was rigged right so spent a lot of time out of the harness and was very sore the next day.

A bloke was kind enough to let me try his modern rig and it was super light.

I think I'm going to find the money somehow. I have no idea why I ever stopped sailing.

I came back after a 20 year lay-off last summer. I'm having a ball. Bought some 10 year old gear. I've been to the beach 36 times this season. Only a handful of days was there not enough wind to go out. I'm on a 95L board but looking for something a little bigger.

I got back into it last year after a 15 year rest. So glad I did. Got back into it much quicker than I thought I would. Managed to complete the first beach start and gybe first time out so was super stoked. The only problem is my mind wants to go a bit faster than the body seems able to handle. But the only injuries so far have been gybing and jamming my foot in the straps so broken little toe and ruptured big toe tendon. But they heal. Modern gear is awesome. It's a good crew at Melville, all very helpful and encouraging. Welcome back. See you in about four weeks when my foot is fixed

CapnNemo, Pro Tip: make all your sails the same colour bag so the wife doesn't notice !

CapnNemo, Pro Tip 2: The habit of engaging in idle chit-chat with the minister for finance and war on your return home that the wind wasn't quite strong enough or you could have done with an extra half hour is one of the serious errors that leads to your sailing "demotion". The minister wants to know her money is well spent and leave passes are much appreciated, so tell her how good it was and how great you feel, even if it was a really crappy sail, odds are she will then be happy to authorize more $$ for kit and time for sailing .

And get any new purchases freighted to your work address so you can sneak them into the garage at an appropriate time. Geez I'm a bad person, but the thrill of windsurfing overrides any anxiety due to having a conscience

Quantify your purchases with minister for finance and war by annualising the costs.

That new $800 sail is going to last five years. Resale $200. That's $120/year. That's an incredibly cheap sport/hobby/addiction.

This was me about six months ago. I have found so much joy in sailing again, meeting people who are so friendly, welcoming and encouraging. I have just upgraded my initial purchase, a tabou rocket with some camed sails, and i can't wait. Enjoy dude your gonna have so much fun!

Yeah but you actually 3 or 4 of those sails... and two masts and probably two booms and definitely a few fins and...

Hey Johno116 have you been out yet? I got out on Saturday for my second session. Much better, got my harness lines sorted so much less taxing on the upper body. Cardio fitness was still a problem though. Busted a footstrap but could have been worse given the gear is all 20yrs old.

Had a blast. Get out there!

And then you 10 sessions out of it it's only $12 per outing.

......and always stress that the purchases are an 'investment in my health'. Finance and War minister likes one to stay healthy for income earning purposes.
