I was just wondering how many people tend to sail in the Caloundra area, as I am out there on the holidays and there never seems to be very many others. My dad says a few decades ago the place was crowded with sailers. Just wondering :)

Hi,

there are some who still go there but I am not sure how many try it in winter. I am rather new to the sport so am not that familiar with what goes on there. I can say that not so many go there compared to the old days. The two spots generally used are Golden Beach and Happy Valley. Wave sailors also work around the breaks near Dicky and Moffat Beach. Depends on the wind a lot. In winter the prevailing direction is SW and W at times. The better NE winds work around the spring and summer time. Some don't get too excited unless it gets over 20knots. While there may not be as many adherents to the sport than in the past, the enthusiasm amongst those who sail up this way is still high. There is also a fairly good choice of places to go on the coast. For me I am happy to wait for spring as the water and air is warmer.
