I know the whole Hawaii thing has been talked about to death but bare with me.

I'm planning on going to Hookipa/Sprecks for 10-14 days somewhere between June/August, staying somewhere in Paia.

My problem however is due to my age, 19, I won't be able to rent a car. For those in the know are there any places close enough to the beach to not necessitate a car? Is it a casual enough place to consider hitch hiking with gear..? Are there places where mostly windsurfers stay that would be open to the idea of being a taxi..? Any other suggestions or solutions?

Try one of the hostels. You should be able to scam a lift each day for petrol or beer.

There is the Rainbow Surf Hostel in Paia that could hook you up with mates and have a lift to other beaches.

If you have a lot of cash, Mama's fish house rent some room and Mama's is a spot also very close to Hookipa. If you got money, rent something in Kuau close the water and walk down to that tricky spot.

If you have a lot of cash, there iare some cottage to rent in sprecks, right on the spot. Sail in, Sail Out.
If you don't have a lot of cash...well...the hostel and I wish you good luck to find a generous body to car pool with...

There are definitely options.

I did an aloha clinic with Matt Pritchard last year without a car. They get about 12 people and you stay at spreakes beach house. Everyone has a car. I just bummed a lift each day and bought that person dinner. Everyone wins.
You can also hire a bicycle and ride to Paia for food/groceries. Matt will deliver the gear to you.

If you go when there is no clinic, you can stay in the rooms at Matt pritchards property. Just tag along with him to the beach each day.

I guess what im saying is email Matt Pritchard. He will sort you out. Just google Matt Pritchard windsurfing.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Yes I am travelling alone. It seems we are spoilt for choice in regards to accommodation but I will definitely look into hostels as well as the Pritchard clinic. Cheers.
