Burrum Heads Windfest 2012 Flyer, come along and enjoy the event and everything the location has to offer.

this years event will follow a similar format as previous events. with one change being the radar class has been excluded. i will have my radar gun at the event though so if we get enough interest we will include that category.
as always, competitors must wear life jackets and hold a current awa membership. memberships can be gotten via the windwanderers for those not currently covered.
again this year, speed HQ is the burrum sands where we will also be holding the end of event bbq and prize ceremony.
prizes as still being finalised. we already have a weekends accomodation and other windsurfing gear up for grabs.
bookings are already happening up at burrum heads so now's the time to start confirming your plans.
easiest way to find accomodation is at burrum sands, contact brooke, http://www.burrumsands.com.au/contact.htm or at elders realty burrum heads. http://www.eldersburrumheads.com.au/ there is also the caravan park http://www.beachfronttouristparks.com.au/index.php?page=burrum-heads-beachfront-caravan-park
for the non windsurfers hervey bay is only 25 minutes away with tourist attractions and shopping. burrum is also a fantastic spot for fishing and sup'ing. http://herveybaytouristcentre.com.au/
below are a couple of photos to wet the appetite, one of the speed bank which is 4km or so long and another of the view from speed HQ.

I can't find the Windwanderers site to find out how much it is to join as I'm not a member of any club, Are windwanderers still going and affliated with AWA? How much will it to join for the event? How much is the entrance fee and does it include a dinner this year? |

| I'm glad to hear the windwanderers are still going and the move to the Sunshine Coast sounds promising. Thanks for the info about the event. Greg and I will be there. |

thanks anne and custom1111!
yep, you can join on the day. i will be starting up pre event signon earlier than the event so people can do it online as well ahead of time. this does make it easier on the day but either way is fine.
look forward to catching up with you and greg at burrum anne. |

| I wanna get to this event in either 2013 or 2014, and stay for about a month, is this the windiest/most reliable time of year for wind?? Need to plan well in advance! Ta |

hi hardy,
the timing of the event is a very good time of the year for the wind. when we first moved the event to burrum heads i bought statistical data from the BOM to give us the best chance possible.
the data showed that january and march are the 2 months of the year with the best averages of strong winds. we then combine that with the tidal predictions to ensure an afternoon low tide so the bank is exposed at the right time of the day and over the period of a weekend. so from a point of view of the event that's our window.
the other time that does get wind is in the months around november when the northerlies come through.
you don't need a low tide to sail burrum, high tide is beautiful as well and provides bump and jump. a 3 minute sail over to woodgate will also provide a change with small waves, probably about waist high.
i gota say, there is no place like burrum that i am aware of. when you stand half way out along the bank during a super low tide and look in both directions the expanse it is awe inspiring.
the other thing burrum has going for it is fishing, supping and access to hervey bay and fraser island. every easter burrum heads holds the fishing classic which is a major fishing event in australia. thousands turn up for that. |

Hey Gestalt,
I am thinking of driving up to Burrum from the sunny coast as I will be on up there on holiday but can only make it on the Saturday. Burrum looks like a fantastic location, I have freeride gear and I'm around intermediate level so just wondering if it is worth driving up for a sail? Or is it only for speedsters/gps? Is there plenty of room to sail so I won't get in the speeders way?
Thanks
Jon |

Hi Jon,
we like to keep the course to competitors only. mainly because of safety as it is the competitors who attend briefings etc so they are advised on course directions, rules etc.
but that said, it's a big place, i am certain you will find somewhere to sail outside of the course area, add to that that the course only opens at low tide that gives you the entire area to sail at high to mid tides.
i'd like to encourage you to come along, and everyone else for that matter. if you aren't keen to sign on then please don't be shy, come out to the course and spectate, join in with the parties at the end of the day etc. also looking for people to help out. all in all it's a lot of fun the event. |
