Just been talking with fangy about the problem of only being able to use the GW52 with windows, due to needing the windows only utility.
There is a thought that the uni hacking club could get into a GW52 and change it's mode to look like a standard memory device.
This would enable any operating system to access it's data.

Obviously they need a unit/s to experiment on.

So are there any unloved/damaged units out there, that could help out?

Has anybody tried this already? With what sort of results?

Hmm, you may be better off trying to install a micro SD card in it and get it to write to that as a universal memory (or whatever that call it). With all the pressure and requests on Locosys to do just what you propose, their answer was that it was not technically desirable/possible. It may have to do with memory being allocated for different things, like saving settings etc.

The official answer was:

Thanks for your email.
Due to the HW problem (MCU maker, ****** didn't support Macintosh OS).
The current GW-52 have no way to run on Macintosh OS, but we will consider your opinion in our next product.

Thnak you very much!

However, it is probably easier to just make your own Ublox based logger like this old prototype test unit (twin 10Hz M6 GPS with two SD cards) from Manfred Fuchs:

or easier still, this Bluetooth ublox M8 prototype receiver from Manfred to work with GPS-Logit (on it's way to me to test):

I forget when it was now, but not long after we got the GW52s, somebody said it's probably possible to change the communication mode. This only require the unit to be plugged into a computer with the right hacking software, there's no extra use of memory, it's just the flipping of a virtual switch in the firmware. Shouldn't be much trouble if you know what you're doing. I'll see if I can find the posts.

Think I was talking to jn1 but our conversation must have gone private and those messages have disappeared.
But I was encouraged that changing communication mode is possible by this error message I got when the usb connection went doggy.

To me this infers that there is more than one communication mode, hopefully there's one that any OS can use.

But you're right Andrew, it will be much easier for me to build a dongle than try to do this hack. If an unwanted unit appears it will go straight to Fangy's uni friends.

Nice find Elmo!

Did a quick check and it uses the Ublox M7 GPS chipset so it should work really well @ 10Hz with a BT version of GPS-Logit (in Beta testing now).

The M7 GPS chip is now superseded by the M8 chip which is what Raymond and Manfred etc are testing @ up to 18Hz.

If this guy does another batch, sll you need to di is put it in a really waterproof housing (like and otterbox) and you are away. Oh, and we need to convince Manfred to continue development of the BT version of GS-Logit.
