I saw this today, anyone with hero 5 black (not me) can get overlays on videos. gopro.com/en/au/news/New-Telemetry-Feature-Quik-Desktop-App

I'm messing around with the quick gopro app at the moment and comparing the gopro tracks with my gw52 in gps results and so far the results look good. They seem to be within half a knot of each other which for video purposes is perfectly good enough for me. So far this looks like a real winner. I'll post a vid as soon as I get some decent footage. I've always wanted a cam with this feature and so far it's looking very good.

So here's a little bit of what the GoPro gauges look like:

It's not the most exciting footage ever and as you can see I'm not exactly setting the water on fire with my speed. In my defence the wind was quite light and I only rigged an 8.6 as I cbf rigging anything bigger. I'm also getting fat which doesn't help. My GW52 recorded a max 2 second of 22 knots and the GoPro seems to be pretty close to that. My original estimate of half a knot difference seems to be a bit harsh. It looks closer than that.

This was my first use of the Hero 5 gps and it worked first time which was kind of suprising. To get the gauges up in the video you have to use the quik app, the GoPro desktop software doesn't support it yet. I usually use Sony movie studio 13 platinum and there was a noticeable drop in video quality with the quik app but I've only used it once so maybe I can tweak some settings. The editing in the GoPro software feel a bit clunky compared to the sony program but it's free and the sony stuff is 100 bucks when it's not on sale so it's a bit unfair to be critical of the Go Pro software.

There are other gauges available but I disabled the less relevant ones to keep the clutter down. One of the gauges shows altitude which could be cool for kiters to make a jumping vid with real time height. I'm Going to try to get down to budgiewoi soon I'll post a budgie vid if I can manage it.

Very cool app!

What I find very interesting is that the speed oscillations seem to match the camera bouncing up and down very well.

I noticed that myself! I guess it's an indication of good gps performance?

Unfortunately battery performance seem to be a big problem with practically every camera sold. A firmware update has helped things a little but it's still not good. Unless you really want the gps stick to the hero 4's.

An update to the battery situation, I'm running version 1.55 of the firmware and I'm getting about 1 hour 15 minutes of recording time give or take 5 minutes. That's recording at 1080p 60 fps with the gps on. I can live with that considering the cam is doing 2 jobs at once with the gps on. You need to go through the options and turn off anything you don't use. It can make quite a difference to battery life. I'm going to try some 4k recording tomorrow with the gps off. If I get 45 minutes of battery in 4k I'll be happy.
