here's one from left field, not so long ago there was some talk about speed kiter's sailing in shallow water and gaining from ground effect or something along those lines, are we experiencing anything similar sailing in such shallow water?

Choco!!!.... wash your mouth out!!! I never heard such dribble... It was obvioulsy the skill and courage of the sailors ..

No. The water is at least half a meter deep in most of the lake. Where it is a bit shallower it is actually slower because your fin drags on the weed. However, it is an advantage to sail on such flat water! Someone spent many thousands of dollars digging a canal in France to achieve flat water. They should have just planted some weed! Ask the dutch guys about how the weed in Strand Horst keeps the water flat!

Whahaha...we never sail on weed, I can assure you. It'll slow you down. But seriously this is no comparison with Horst. This spot is insane. If you get 40+ knots winds I wouldn't be surprised if 50 knots average will be broken.
