Put the GoPro on the end of the boom and experimented with different angles.
Was a good 15-20knts NE enough for the 6.6

Hi Stanly,

what mounting position and angles worked best?

Find getting the horizon level is hard. Although downhill seas can add to sense of speed

Tried a back of boom top mount. Had waist up sailor in view. So your mounts are better. May try a under boom mount next time. Reluctant to have it too exposed (sticking out from the boom) in waves.

Will be slightly different to your mounts as I have a Countour HD 135 degree wide lens camera with water proof housing and a bike reflector holder at the moment.

What editing software do you have and does it include video stabilizer enhancement? I had a lot of jarring when sailing in rough seas south of Wello markers on a 5.0 and wave board as wind kicked in before dark. Which format and resolution do you save it in before uploading to YouTube?

Yesterday was the first time I mounted it on the boom using the standard bicycle mount. I think is is best set under the boom and set square (as in my clip from 2:47 on, although should be angled down slightly rather than looking along the boom so the board will be in frame).
You'll then have to rotate the image 180' when editing. I set it to record on max quality and then add all the clips to movie maker to edit and publish.
The Gopro editing software downloaded from the GoPro site is good for editing if you want to zoom in on a particular part of the frame.

I have some parachute cord and elastic cord to tie it to the boom so if it do get knocked off it would still be attached.

i did that one with it stuck on the back of the boom , it was a north boom with the big flat carbon part so i could just use the stick on things . There is a setting on the go pro so you can make it record up the other way when you mount it upside down . I didnt know go pro had software ill have to have a look , it was way to hard to use the stuff i used .

Good angle amazing how much direction adjustment of board we make to keep it in a straight line.

I agree, that's some of the best footage I've seen

Agree as well
Simon100's is a great clip, also means you can see what your stance is like and what your doing during gybes etc for self help improvements.
Simon100 - Can you post a pic of how you have the GoPro mounted?

PS here's the link for the free CineForm Studio software on the GoPro site.

I use a bicycle clamp with an extra fitting to get it out from the side of the boom a bit further. Hard to stop it slipping. The mast attachment is just a plastic spring clamp from bunnings with some padding under it clamped about 400mm from the top of the mast.
I use VideoPad Video Editor.
The board angle changes when boom mounted is an illusion, its the sail being adjusted.
The footage from simon100 is the best I have seen.

haha yeah i could see what i was doing in the gybes , thats why there all edited out .
Sorry i dont have that boom now so i cant get a pic but on the back of a north platinum there is a flat peice of carbon joining the 2 tubes , i just used one of the stick on mounts that come with the go pro and put it under the boom in the center , i was worried the sail might block the view but its barely noticeable . Those stick on mounts stick unbelievably well . One thing to be careful of though with it hanging under the back of the boom , one time the camera cliped the water and it undid the clip that holds the water proof case shut , almost lost my camera. The clip look as well designed as it could be for that not to happen but it did so next time ill put a bit of tape over it so the water cant get under.

cut a strip the circumference of the boom tube from an old bike inner tube slightly wider than the clamp, then put it between the boom and clamp. should give the clamp a bit of grip and stop it slipping.

Will have to try something similar the next time it is windy.

Thats a good idea. I was using some non slip matting, but bicycle tube would be much better. I have just tryed wiping the lens with Rainx Glass treatment to stop droplets ruining the footage. Cant guarantee its not damaging as the instructions warn about non compatibility with some plastics. Not sure if the Gopro lens is plastic or glass ?

My botched attempt on same (late) afternoon at Wellington Point. At least had some gentle rollers coming through.

Tried the YouTube stabilisation option, but didn't work very well plus border started moving about.

Helmet mount not much better on previous occasion. If camera angled down more the board will be more visible and create more perspective and interesting.

More wind but less waves.

PS. Will delete these clips after a few days.

Nice footage Mux, I know its not too choppy but I have to say that your Manta sits on the water very nicely.

Good idea... need a budding up and coming film maker to collect all the footage over a season and make a movie about WS in SEQ, all the proceeds could go towards a BBQ and beer
