hay all, I got this silly dream to snowkite around with the northern lights in norway.
so having never been in snow before for any real length of time. I have never snowboarded before. so im praying I get a job as a snowmaker this season in aus/nz. im a fit 27 yr old male whose goal driven and is happy if I never see another nightclub again hahaha, my recent working background is building large civil works prisons carparks hospitals that sort of thing. so I know I can do the 12hour shifts physically. I know the conditions will be nearly impossible at first but I am quite serious about norway, so itll be a breeze in comparison and exactly the lessons I need to learn in a supervised environment, so perfect. the pay doesnt bother me im here to learn about snow itself and to learn how to snowboard and kitesnowboard.
Had a great day out with Tim touring to Kootapatamba Hut NW from Thredbo top station on Saturday 11 Sept. Winds were forecast at 10-15 knots and expected to drop, so took our big kites with us (me with my 6m Samurai foil and Tim with his depowerable 12m.) Big mistake, because when we arrived at the playground just NW of Ramshead Range the winds were blowing a tad higher (approx 20-25 knots) so we thought that an alpine ski tour to Kootapatamba Hut might be a better option.

Checked out the Hut which had snow inside because the door was ajar. So we dug out the snow around the door so it could be opened and closed properly. We decided to launch our kites near the Hut in the valley where the winds were a lot kinder. The kites dragged us out of the valley heading north towards the path leading up to Kossi. When we got to the top of the saddle the winds picked up so we dropped our kites and skied down towards the path/poles leading to Charlottes Pass. We then relaunched our kites and k...

Reply posted by christop...

Hi Jan,

Falls is great for snowkiting. I have been heading up there since 2002. Depending on the wind you may want to start somewhere between the top of Ruined Castle or Scotts chair. Between the two is a nice bowl that has variable wind depending on your placement. You can head all the way out to Mt Makay if the weather is right. Pretty flat and high generally means stable wind. Be careful with gusty conditions as it would be unfortunate to find yourself wrapped around a chairlift and may make it a lot harder for fellow kiteskiers to use the terrain in the future. My experience has been that the mountain staff have generally been supportive if you are sensible. Have a bit of video footage of the area but I cannot seem to upload it.

Cheers,

Chris ;-)

If you explore, you may find a bare patch somewhere but in my opinion the terrain is a bit too rough. There are some open fields down in the valleys, but the wind is probably **** and you'd get bored in about 10 minutes also being confined to a square paddock.

Niseko is however awesome for snowboarding or skiing, so forget the kites and just have a blast. Best mountain ever.

I'm not sure what the other ski areas in Japan are like, but it's completely different to any of the aussie or NZ snow areas.

Ben and I went up to Kiandra on Tuesday, but found the snow cover was too light (5-10cm) . So went up to Mt Selwyn (another 10klms away), which is a small budget ski resort ($70 for full day; $60 half day).

Ben (with snow board) and I (with alpine alpine touring skis) walked up 500m to the top of the Home Run Poma and then another kilometre towards a plateau (heading east)which is relatively open for snow kiting.

Ben launched his PL Synergy 12m twin skin kite and took off in gusty 10-20 knots, but found that the wind rising to the plateau created a lot of updraft and he found himself being lofted . I was in the meantime setting up a PL Venom 13m, but decided to pack it up (still getting used to this type of kite). I launched my tiny 2.5m PL Rebble and initially was underpowered, but the wind picked up and I had a ball.

The pics below give some idea of the area we were kiting.

You might describe this area as a budget option, because the only cost (apart from fuel from C...

Reply posted by Flyingdutchy...

I've flown foils from 1.5m (in 40knot winds!) to 6m (Samurai) and had loads of fun. I'll take some of them up this year but I'm going to try out a Peter Lynn twin skin Venom 14m this year to see how that feels. It can cope with a wider wind range, depowers really well and if I have a stack, hopefully it will auto zenith until I recover.....anyway here's hoping!!!

Reply posted by kitethrills...

Hi Guys,

theres a really good spot on the eastern side of ramshead. Its a bowl that sort faces NE. Its got a few perfect faces in w or NW winds where the kite will sit out in front of you near the edge zone - as you ride teh fall line the kite is depowered and just follws you down with minimal pull on your harness. at teh bottom you can just edge against the kite and in one tack your back at teh top to lay some fresh lines next to you old ones. Also its nice and close to Thredbo - all downhill in case you break a line or hurt yourself or the weather comes in unexpectantly. one of favourite sessions out of threders was here last season.

for the less adventurous (not many snowkiters in this category) the area around kosi lookout (top of the gully above thredbo basin) is really fun in most winds except S.

have a ball

Kitethrills and crew are heading to NZ this year. We are going to Mt Olympus which I thin...
