Hi--new member here---
Anyone building thier own landsailer sails? I am setting up to design and build my own sails.
And should it be the same at the top as the bottom Mast pockets is what I'm talking about. When I knocked together the sail for 'Test Bed' I just took the max spec size from the Class 5 regs which I think was 140mm flat. I've just spotted an article explaining windsurf downhaul about the bottom of the sail being the 'engine' and the top the 'exhaust'. And that the bottom needs the battens close to the mast to get the correct shape but away from the mast at the top. Is this correct? Should I tighten the pocket to be close to the mast (not too tight to stop easy movement) then run the stitching straight along the pocket or should I follow the mast's taper Thoughts from the experts please, as currently the sail is like an on off switch, literally nothing happens till the wind picks up then it's off like a rocket

Cheers Col

But just a quick question on luff curve. How exacly is the luff curve template done? Do I attach a rope to the top of the mast to the end of the boom and sheet it in all the way, then mark the curve of the mast on the template?

Cheers,

Adam.

They have picked up a load of the Neil Pryde Irish factory liquidation sale stuff. Just bought 110 batten ends at 4p each, and previously had 7.5m2 of sail cloth of them. Currently selling 1000 battens with ends for £342.
On my A Class Cat (see avatar pic) I have put on a new and much fuller sail to get more off-wind and down-wind performance. As expected I have suffered upwind, to some detriment.
Naturally, it needs to be more flat upwind and needs more prebend in the rig, (10m of CF wing) but I don't want to lose shape by cranking it up too much and going back to where I was last season with my old sail.
I can really feel the drag upwind and against other boats it seems 'laggy'. Lots of downhaul/Cunningham helps but the sail gets stretched so much down the luff when you really crank it on.
My reason to post this?
Landyacht sails seem really flat and generate much higher apparent wind speeds, being an upwind machine that they are. I am hoping to get some advice from the LY speed freaks out there to get more speed out of my Cat, from anyone who can suggest something.
Any suggestions most welcome.

Both mast sleeve/pockets have been cut in half and stitched together. Also some holes in whats left of sleeve. Has some ally plates riveted to it so it wraps round the mast and then is strapped together to form one heavy sail. So it would need the pocket cutting off and a new one knocking up out of something (twice) also no battens, and a load of holes to patch... but it is a 5.5m class 5 sail.
/Img/Photos/Land_Yachting/5206753.jpg

Any thoughts on what is the best way forward and please ...

Hi All,

With the help of my father and other friends I built a landsailer when I was in my early twenties (some ~10 years ago now). It is predominantly built from aluminium scafolding tube, with a 5 meter aluminium mast (with zero rake). It's roughly 1.8 meters wide and 2.5 meters long.

When I had it going I used a recut windsurfing sail, which I've still got (and would probably still be servicable) but it has seen better days and I'd like a replacement.

So, down to the questions!

Why dont people get sails made specifically for landsailing?
Given that they're almost flat, why don't people make the sails themselves?
With a non-curved mast like mine, would a recut windsurf sail ever perform well?
Has anyone tried creating a hybrid foil with a aluminium frame like an ultra light and sail material?

Any advice as to which way to go with this would be greatly received.

Cheers

Adam.

TP1 and i just finished recutting a interesting windsurfer sail into a 4m mini sail. It features 3 cammed battens, and the cams have rollers on them so you dont needd mast rotation.
the top is very fine so the mast needs to a neat fit. we didnt have a mast to suit, so ive decided to give the sail away for free.................but you will need to bring a mini and a boom of at least 1800mm as well as a 400cm RDM skinny carbon mast to lake Lefroy to claim your sail. you may have to cut down a 430 or a 460 but thats your problem you will also need some small pulleys to build a multi down haul as the sail will need about 4:1 at least.
first in best dressed, and no i wont freight it as i want to see it sail.
hence you have to bring a yacht
http://www.seabreeze.com.au/img/photos/land_yachting/5156070.jpg

Reply posted by Nikrum...

Oh! Poop! Well I literally did as you suggested Paul, I cut the Luff Pocket to exactly parallel. It doesn't quite work that way. Starting at the top I measured the Half Width as it is folded in half and transferred this measurement down the pocket and cut as I went. Hm! Perhaps I should see how it looks wrapped about the Mast Base.. Oops! Cart before the horse. If I sew that lot together it will be a tight fit I think. Because of the design and method of trapping the Sail Head at the Mast Top The Luff Pocket is fairly narrow and I didn't take this into account and allow a little more room at the bottom of the pocket to accommodate the mast base. Oh Well! I will have to make a new Pocket I guess..
The Trials and Tribulations of a Land Yacht builder.
