Hi One and all, I had always thought that the sailing community was a pretty good group of girls and guys with the thrill and or serenity of sailing being what it was all about, but i have been a little disapionted of late as to the ethics of some of our fallow sailors, in the past i have had my boat moored in Cronulla and have never had a problem , but this year i have bought my boat to Sydney and moored around the Five Dock Bay area, first someone decidered thay needed the hallyard winch that was very securly attached to the mast more than i did, so the stole that, ($1000 bucks to replace), then last weekend i went on board to fix sum stuff and the spinnaker pole has been taken. I understand that times are tough but if you can afford to buy your boat then buy your own dam gear, a spinniker pole would only be of use to another sailor so its disapointing to know that there is probibly someone that is moored close to me that has no scupples. OK i have had my winge, Hope you all have a...

Hi groovers. Ex-lurker here. My first post. Howdy and thanks for all the great advice I've gleaned over the last 12 months.

I've been looking for a while now at getting an old yacht under 30 foot. I looked at one the other day which was mostly fine except that when motoring the 8hp Yanmar smoked a bit in cabin. You wouldn't want to sit in there under power (which i obviously wouldnt do but the missus might under certain conditions). It's the original, which makes it about 35 years old.

I'm not particularly mechanically knowledgeable so I'd love some advice on this. How common is this? I've not seen this before but then my experience is limited. I suppose it could be a number of things and I'm not sure I can give much more info.

I'm trying to work out whether this is avoidable and also how much I'd be risking a costly / inconvenient / dangerous problem.

Cheers.

That day back in 2010 was much the same as last Saturday, a stiff South Westerly which prompted Phil, a man who was thrifty with his words, to remark simply "that was a whole lot of fun" before shaking my hand and driving home to Wellington NSW where he'd retired.

So at 11.15am Saturday we dropped the mooring in Careel Bay, sailing off silently in a flukey...

Hi. If this has been covered before I'd appreciate a point in the right direction (searched but no real hits).

I've been trying to ascertain the real cost of yacht ownership (26 - 30' cruising yacht in Sydney). Some people say that it costs you everything you have whereas others seem to say it just takes a couple of thousand a year . It seems most are intentionally ignorant or just coy about the real costs. But I actually really want to know. In advance. Before I'm forking it out.

This is what I've come up with so far and would appreciate your input.
Hi all, my very first post although a regular reader of the forums.

I'm seeking any information on yachts built by the Burton Bros. of Perth WA, particularly a 42' Racer/Cruiser designed by naval architect Graham Tilley.

I am told one was built for a then commodore of The Freshwater Bay Yacht Club in the late 70's, I think it was named 'Western Union'.

Others built of the same design include 'Rebecca Rose' and 'Time Out' as well as a centre cockpit version going by the name of 'Aquarius'. I believe all are WA yachts?

Could anyone point me in the right direction or give me a contact as I cannot find anything by googling other than Graham Tilley was involved in the design of the 'Endeavour' range of coastal sailers on the east coast.

Anything to start will do.

Kind Regards
Jahwobble

I went for a swim off my yacht last weekend and took the opportunity to have a look at the anode to see how it was travelling. Looked like it was doing what it is supposed to do and wearing away nicely. While checking this out I noticed that there was a patch of marine growth (superficial) in the area immediately around the anode and from it travelling up to the waterline. In the area forward and aft of the anode the growth was the same as on the rest of the hull. So there was just this one patch around the anode.

Is this just coincidental or does the deteriorating anode create the conditions that are more conducive to marine growth?

Could the assembled wisdom in here please relate the current thinking on osmosis regarding modern, supposedly well built yachts using all the best of everything? Now before everyone starts telling me how to repair it, let me say I don't have any, I'm just curious as to how it's addressed by the various builders these days.

One European manufacturer gives five years warranty against osmosis and even boasts of using vinyl ester resin in the gel coat. Now surely if you can use vinyl ester resin for the gel coat, surely you can build the entire boat with it as well and not increase the costs too much. In the quantities that I buy resin, there is a price difference, but that is retail quantities, not the 200 litre drums that factories buy by the pallet load.

The factory that uses vinyl ester resin for the gel coat is Delphia in Poland, I don't know what any of the other European brands such as Bavaria, Hanse, Baneteau or even Jeanneau use in their construction or what warrant...
