Howdy,

I am a 6'2" 93kg beginner and looking for my first board for general flatwater paddling, mucking around with kids and starting in the surf (possibly throwing a sail rig on for general fun too). Ultimately progressing to more surfing use - I can imagine keeping this longer board as an all rounder and getting something shorter when the surf skills improve.

The Starboards seem to be best represented here on the west coast. I have been considering the Blend 11' 2" as a starter or the 10'5" Widepoint. Which would be most stable? What would you go with?

I have ridden the 10' 5" Drive a bit but seem to need a bit more stability in chop at this stage. Dont like the Whopper much. Does anyone demo the 10 5" widepoint here in Perth?

I would be keen to hear what more experienced people think. Any help much appreciated.

cheers
Leeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Hi All,

I just started SUPing about a month ago but spent a lot of my youth windsurfing competitively and surfing a long board on the East Coast of the US (mushy waist to head high waves mostly).

I am 42, 6"1 and 185-190 lbs. Our first board was an 11'6" Jimmy Lewis Cruise Control-wanted a tank for both my wife and I to share and a board we could take our 5 year old twins on. We got a great deal on a new but last years model and the board is good on flat water but can already tell at its size and volume it is not going to be the best in the surf. As we are likely looking to get another board so the mrs and I can paddle together I was hoping to get a board that will work for me in waist to head high surf and also work as a more allround board for her. The boards I like the looks of are the Coreban Icon and Fusion, the Fanatic all wave and the Nash Nalu 9"6 or 10"6.5. Unfortunately no demos close by so I am likely to have research and buy without trying. Again, looking for so...

This was only my second time out on the sup, having never done or used a sup before the first time out felt completely alien to me. I think i would compare it to standing on a fitness ball, but this morning everything felt much more natural after a while, i was up and riding my first few waves. The board felt really stable and pretty good on the wave although really difficult to turn, I guess that will take some getting used to. The board seems really user friendly, so can't wait to get back out there. cheers destination X for giving me some good advice and selling me a sweet board. PRAWNDOG out

Hi - thanks to advice on here I had narrowed my new board choice to a Fanatic Allwave but now that I have had an unexpected car bill there is no way I can afford a new board. So it is the second hand market for me and there's no Allwaves coming up where I am. There's a good number of Whoppers and Drives though.

My bias is for surfing but I am now seeing the benefits of just getting out on calm coastal water for fitness paddling too. So my thoughts on the two boards are:

Drive: better all rounder, good on flat water and can surf. As i am mainly surfing I'd like to hear views on how well they surf on smaller waist high waves that are pretty weak mostly. Keep on hearing they are tippy boards but I am guessing that is just lack of water time? I'.m thinking this board has more progression built into it rather than the Whopper?

Whopper: very stable, good in surf, quick to learn on but a dog on the flat. My main worry on the Whopper is is the calm coastal paddling....will it just z...

Hi guys,
Need a bit of info regarding blade size, as I'm in the market for a new paddle and have read in this forum and elsewhere that too large a paddle blade can induce joint injury on shoulder/elbows etc.
I'm 5'10" tall, 90 kg and 40 years old. I'm currently surfing a Starboard 8'10" Widepoint but still have an entry level aluminium shaft adjustable paddle.
I'm keen on the Starboard Enduro Wave paddle, which has a blade area of 600 square cm. Is this too large for surf only use noting my height/weight. Any insight into this would be much appreciated.

Regards
Brad

Hi everybody.
I'm looking for a fin to replace in my Naish Glide 12´6, the original one allows me only 5 or 6 strokes per side in flatwater. I'm thinking in the FCS Danny Ching fin or any other that gives me at least 10 strokes per side.
Has anybody tried the DC FCS?
I'm 100 kg, any suggestions?

I am currently searching for an SUP that I can learn to surf with. I will be spending the summer, maybe longer, down in Sayulita, Mexico, surfing and SUP surfing. I would like to purchase a board that allows me some room to grow but doesnt make the learning curve insanely steep as well. I have come across a HYPR Winged Lion (9'2 x 31" x 5.5"). I am 5'11 and 177 lbs (180cm / 80kg). The price is right on this board as it comes with paddle, deck pad, and leash for $700usd so I am very tempted. I am just not sure if the dimensions are a fit. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

brad

http://www.seabreeze.com.au/img/photos/stand_up_paddle/6026660.jpg
http://www.seabreeze.com.au/img/photos/stand_up_paddle/6026662.jpg

Rode the Starboard 14' x 28" Race AST Coastrunner yesterday on a choppy ocean downwinder form Moffat's beach to Mooloolaba yesterday. There were small runners and the wind from S - SE at 10 -12 with 15kt gusts. The board is 283L and weighs in about 15.5 kg in the glass epoxy build.
First off I was blown away at the this board's stability, at 28" wide it just smoothed the chop and unlike wave piercing noses, the big bulbous nose is not affected and it's very easy to track straight with. Fitted with a JM fin, I felt it wanted to track and head off downwind more than if the standard fin was fitted , but only when paddling out when the wind was from abeam.

http://www.seabreeze.com.au/img/photos/stand_up_paddle/6035652.jpghttp://www.seabreeze.com.au/img/photos/stand_up_paddle/6035761.jpg
Given you are standing maybe a few cm at most above the waterline, waves do slop over onto the deck, but within a few seconds the deck is just dry again with the huge drains.
Hi folks, Has anyone found a portable 12v air compressor that will inflate an iSUP to 15psi or more? I have a Surftech inflatable that needs to be inflated to at least this psi. I have an Island electric pump, which is great, but only gets the Surftech to about 11.5psi. After this it's back to the hand pump and a lot of hard work. I see many 12v compressors available that can pump tyres to 150 psi or more but do they have attachments suitable to pump up iSUPs? Haven't found one yet, but I'm sure they must be out there. Pumping by hand is ok exercise, but at the end of the day you want to get your board in the water as quick as possible.
