Finally got to edit and load footage of a couple of sessions from canton. First one is a light wind cruise with heaps of sunshine (wrong forecast) and fun conditions with a big crew out. Crossovers, bear aways and drags. Bloody fun day!!
Stopped at certain points to get some footage of the boys sailing.
Last little but was a very late change that came up the coast and we were all frothing for it. Wind went SSE (not the best direction for canton) but was still great fun with some sweet bear aways. I ran out of battery sailing into the sunset.
Great bunch of blokes, great spot and windsurfing rocks.
Had so much fun doing this with my daughter, playing with effects and music.
Please enjoy!!!!
Larko

I have noticed that the Doppler speed in jibes is almost always a lot lower than the non-doppler speed (using a GT-31 and GPS Action Replay). The tighter the jibe, the bigger the difference. Minimum jibes speeds are often 1/3 slower with Doppler, sometimes more than 50% slower. That's true even with good GPS reception (8 satellites) and no obvious outliers in the positional track points.

The Doppler speeds also seem time-shifted relative to the positional speeds by 2-3 seconds (minimum Doppler speed is later). Anyone have a clue why?

The 1 Hz rate on the GT-31 is a bit slow for jibe analysis, anyway. Has anyone looked at the accuracy of newer 10 Hz units recently? It seems that the MTK chipset used in some of these can save Doppler data.

I got home yesterday from work and had a look at the fin I'd been working on the last time I was home. I'm trying to condense a 38cm fin into a shorter one, with the same overall area, that will perform just as well as the larger one but for shallow water with weed that anchors itself to the seabed. Ended up being 27cm and can't remember the area right now!
I guess the beer goggles had let me settle for a second rate job. The fin was crooked on the trailing edge and in frustration I'd let it go until a later date.
So with renewed vigour (and the inspiration that only comes from alcoholic ginger beer) I set about fixing the issue. Put the fin on a flat surface and ran a straight edge around it marking high and low spots. Sorted them out with the bench top sander and realised a low spot towards the base. Kind of flat really, with the ratio around 5%. I'd set the ratio for 7% for this fin and hope like hell my research had paid off. I use the term research loosely as inspiration c...

I have mostly got good speeds without but at times I'm not as fast compared to some with the Maui wide end booms then I know fast sailors that use a narrow end boom & no adjustable s but still go fast.
I have just picked up a Pryde with adjustable s second hand its not as wide on the end as the Maui but will it do?

How do the fin experts on this forum do it?
Note anything that requires more than 10 minutes sanding is out because that is about my attention span when sanding, and that means I will be sanding an anchor.

I came across this photo somewhere recently and it reminded me that it is nice to reflect occasionally on the rich history of our sport.
Interest in speed sailing with windsurfers was very high in the '80's. It dropped off in the '90's except for a couple of moments when records were broken, but it gained a huge boost again after 2004 with the advent of consumer GPS speed logging and the advent of GPS-Speedsurfing.com

If you look carefully you can see our own Mal Wright at the center left, standing in the water with his 13" white board, yellow harness and the number 84 on his sail.

This is probably the board he used to win the inaugural 'Canal' event that year and it also happens to be the board I had only my second measured peak GPS speed of over 40 knots on at Sandy Point in 2004/5!

Seems that there is a sandbar too shallow to sail over just before the finish! You have to sail round it whilst kites can go over.
Antoine holding 2nd spot after 2 sessions.

Lake George - GPS Event 2013

The Beachport Hotel is proudly supporting a windsurfing GPS speed sailing event this coming summer on Lake George, Beachport SA.

Windsurfing SA are the event organisers.

Dates: 1st January - 31st March 2013.

Earlier this year Lake George provided outstanding conditions for speed sailing, and there is much anticipation about the speeds that can be achieved there this coming summer.

Final event details are now being confirmed, but it is likely that the categories will be 2 sec, 5x10sec and NM.

The Beachport Hotel has shown keen support and will be providing great prizes like an awesome 12v car fridge, a cool esky and icy cold slabs of beer to reward competitors.

Sessions at Lake George posted to the GPS Team Challenge will all count for this event, and the open time frame of the event will allow you to chase the optimum conditions to achieve the best speeds.

Of course, when you are at Lake George, be sure to pop into the...

I used to enjoy looking at my GPS tracks on google earth, via KA72. Recently I have been unable to view them because the google earth site locks up before the image comes up. I get an error message saying "page unresponsive, do you want to kill this page?" Then no matter what I try to do the whole computer locks up and I have to reboot to do anything at all.
I have tried reloading Google earth but it tells me my system doesn't support the graphics, regardless of which method I use to access it. It was working for me a month ago, so what has changed?

Any ideas?

I no the latest mistrals are smooth as so i thought that is the way to go just a bit more work or the good old speed finish or is this only good for low to moderate speeds I don't know. Please help me decide friction gurus! Thanks!
