Hey Guys
I want to get into doing downwinders on the King of the Cut course. Maybe prep for last place in the 2020 race (see how we go) Is there anyone living in Safety Bay who wants to go down as often as possible (takes 2 vehicles) and have a crack and also do distance/fitness paddling in Safety Bay area? I work FIFO so when I'm home I have plenty of opportunity.

Also, what Safety gear is required? Do you carry a PLB? Mini flare? phone in a pouch? I've even seen footage of a guy who takes a spare paddle with him strapped to the front of his board (on adventures) Paddle leashes? I have a bright yellow PFD which has a camel back built into it, which is also pretty good impact protection. I'd need a helmet to race so might as well get used to that. Does anyone use waist leashes? So many questions....

I'm looking to get into some downwind races (I'll be aiming to just complete the distance!) over in Victoria. how did you find the safety equipment that is required? I need to get all that in the next week.

and how long would it take to paddle a 20km downwinders event? The winds are most likely to be fairly light, and swell about 2-3 feet. I'm thinking about 5 hours ?????
cheers

For a 20k DW you should be looking sub 3 hours, 2.5 hours if you want to have fun. Otherwise you're just paddling ,not downwinding

Hi mate, If you are after a helmet can I suggest a Gath helmet, which I got through a company in Perth about 5 years ago. I've worn one for years kiteboarding . The helmet is lightweight, streamlined and very comfortable to the point that you don't even realise your wearing it after a short period of time. Stay away from the helmets that have a pull done visor, your better to buy a good pair of water sunglasses.
