From a surf trip to late night TV... Surfing's biggest success story.
"I took what little savings I had, and planned a five month surf trip around the world - around Australia and Indonesia. As luck would have it, I came up with idea for GoPro before I event went on my trip." This week, Nick Woodman, the genius who devised the GoPro sat down with U.S. talk show host of 'The Late Show', Steven Colbert. Joking around, he shared how the very first GoPro camera came about while in the preparation stages of a surf trip to Australia. What he wanted, was a little camera he could strap to his wrist and film his mates with while paddling out, or surfing the shoulder. He didn't know he'd designed a multi billion dollar device, but he knew he'd done something pretty special when he returned from the surfing trip, still with a working prototype. Fast forward from 2002, and GoPro is a household name. The cameras are found on everything from surfboards to military helmets, the trend isn't slowing down. After thousands of impersonations, GoPro is still number 1, and so is Nick Woodman, earning the deep-pocketed privilege of being named Americas highest paid CEO, taking home more than $285 million in 2014. He's 37, but thanks to his ever-present grin and salt encrusted hair, looks more like he's in his 20's. He acts like he's even younger than that, but so you would if your product more than doubled its sales each year! Surfing's biggest success story is a testament to how paddling out really gets the creative juices flowing. Next time you're stuck for ideas, maybe it's time to grab the wettie?
