Yes, but corona virus will subside and car crashes will continue. 1.35 million per year die in car crashes. 50 million lost in the spanish flu. For every person killed in a car crash many more carry a lifetime injury.

If you base the calculations on lost healthy years it's no contest. Activity extends life. Do you count those who die at 65 due to inactivity instigated by a car crash 40 years earlier as car crash victims?

In scenario where even no virus is released but all drastic measure taken to prevent spread- side effects will be very similar.
The real damage is made by drastic measures, closing countries, manufacturing, shops, everything.
Social unrest could be last the the worst of all. On global scale social disobedient and protests are hard to imagine -when people will start to fight each other to get daily necessities, or even hord access. But this rationale that never will be PC accepted.
Amazingly its appear that we could close everything , shut manufacturing ,leave all people in homes and start printing money without any limits ,then everything will be OK. Like a magic circus trick. You could not to create single toilet paper roll from nothing , but you could print trillion dollars in the blink of time.Which one is more real?

This (your) comment won't age well.

That all depends on your definition of "catastrophe", and what aspect of this you apply it too.

I was taking about CFR.

The economic disaster being created will last for a long time. Malaria 500,000 deaths a year does not even feature on these graphs from WHO, look how many already die from lung infections:

It is like the hysteria around sharks.

They are bottom of the list

Yeah, you got the word wrong.
It's pandemic, it's all over the world, just like your type of faulty thought processes.

Well if people are taking knives to the supermarket over toilet rolls, that would qualify for the Darwin Award.

I've come to accept the fact that I won't be able to buy toilet paper for at least 3 months. The longer the shelves are empty, the more people are going to hoard it. If you assume our factories are sized to make how much we need and can't really make double, (a fabricated story to try and stop people hoarding), and that the average family is going to hoard until they have enough for 3 months, then that pretty much uses up all the factory capacity for the next 3 months. But then, if there has been a shortage for 3 months, most people wiil think they need 6 months saved up and hoard even more. So, probably won't be able to get any until at least Christmas.

No, I chose it carefully

If I'd said "pandemic" then someone would have pointed out that Asian bird flu and SARS weren't pandemic, though they were epidemic in my corner of the world.

So, how pedantic do you want to be ... exactly?

^^^ Maybe the factories don't usually operate 24/7.
And I don't give a shiit. I must have changed rolls sometime in February, so I'm about 1/3 of the way through. 1 roll sitting in the cupboard with 360 sheets, equals 90 days normal use. The toilet paper sales group claims that the average person uses 57 sheets a day. How?

Well, you may remember it was me who forewarned of the poo paper problem. The good news is that Tokyo is back on an even keen inventory wise, so I expect things to be back to normal here in 5-6 days. Wish those of us in need luck.

Funny story there.... I noticed a little while back that my socks were becoming more and more scarce. I asked my wife where had all my socks gone? She told me she kept the odd ones in a little pile in the laundry. I went to the pile of 'odd socks'.... and matched 14 pairs!

I was sure that this story was going to be more closely linked to the lack of toilet paper supply.

are you sure it wasn't...??

Making America great again.

They got a late start, but it looks like the USA is keen to prove they are bigger and better at everything, including spreading Coronavirus. They're climbing the list with seemingly unstoppable momentum. Give it another week or so, and the European travel bans imposed by the USA will be protecting Europe more than the USA.
