If you like wind sports you will love Auckland. Its windy, you have two coasts to play with and hundreds of bays and waterways to play in. When I visit I often see them off Orewa Beach just north of Auckland on the east coast. There are also a lot of them out from Bayswater into Shoal Bay. You will see them as you drive north over the bridge - look NE. NZ loves to blow - most days you will find 15 to 20 knots to entertain yourself. On the West Coast there are the normal spots like Muriwai, Bethels, Piha and Karekare that all pick up loads of swell and wind.
There used to be a big windsurfing / kite store on Barry's Point Road (just off the Takapuna exit on the Northern Motorway) I am sure you will find someone there happy to help ya out.
Auckland is an awesome sailing spot on the east side as it is protected from the large ocean swells due to the Coromandle sticking out and a collection of islands.....but it blows!!! Which creates great boating conditions. Its also known as The City of Sails........You will still find a fair bit of chop though to launch off. You do get some NE swells coming in over summer but I do not like your chances in early Nov. The west coast is hardly ever flat if you like the waves. Watch out for some big currents though. Make sure you take some warm clothes and a decent wetsuit. Nov is still cold.
Do yourself a favour while you are there and get stuck into some of these. And if you get the chance catch the fast ferry out to Waihehe Island and have a look around. But most of enjoy........hopefully you will find the kiwi public at their happiest for sometime if all goes well on Sunday. You should be to take advantage of that!!!!!!!
