As with all things the news industry is slowly transitioning to a more online platform. But I can't help but feel deeply ripped off. I feel it more than most because my job entails a lot of waiting around and therefore I bounce between 4-5 news pages, a couple of WA papers, the NT news etc to find out what's happening in each state I used to reside.
But with the transition to online, that would cost me $100's in subscriptions. Now I understand nothing in this world is free but there is nowhere near the content in an online edition compared to hard copy so I don't understand why the cost is similar. If anything it should be makeable cheaper as you don have to produce the paper, run a giant factory, transport far and wide and 100's of job that aid that process.
Should literally be 10% of a hard copy, journos wages, software, ... not the same.
For the minimal content and the high cost, it isn't sustainable. No wonder people turn to facebook for info, very dangerous.

Apple News+ charges $15/mth and looks like you can access most paywall content, comes with a month free trial.
havent used it and not sure if it is only on iOS but seems like a good solution. I just go with Seabreeze and ignorance
The legacy media operations tell us that the price of the newspaper never covered the cost of production. Ads paid for most of the paper. Remember when the Saturday SMH was about 150 pages, about 40 pages each for cars and houses?
Facebook and Google and specialty ad sites like Carsales.com.au and Domain took most of the ads, without producing any of the content.
A levy on their ads revenue which is paid to the journalist organisations looks sensible if we want to keep reading and hearing objective news.

Really? I didn't know that. But their ads are few and inserted at predictable points in the shows, not like annoying pop ups.
What I don't get is why they give me ads for rival streaming services.

The ads for other streaming services... well, if you are like me and watching SBS ondemand or iview, you aren't going to change your viewing habits, so the ads are not a big deal. Maybe they are working like ads really should and maybe you will see something that is worth switching over to?
I used to have a netflix subscription, and dropped it to switch over to Stan for a while, but the content on SBS and ABC is still better than a lot of the crap that you see on netflix or stan.
