Went to Madagascar for 5 weeks in 2016 July/August. Surfing and kitesurfing (on a surfboard not twinny)

Spent a week in the North at Diego Suarez (antsiranana). Kited Sakalava and Emerald Island. EI was sick but it's a day trip to get out there
and there's a few windsurfers too. Sakalava I found was busy. I stayed 15 min away so was annoying to get to. YOu can stay there but it's expensive.

Then went all the way South (absolute mission without flying, the roads are ****ed) to Anakao on the South West Coast and stayed there for 4 weeks. Excellent kiting and surfing. There's a kite camp/school there in the South end of the beach. but I just kited from where I was staying at chez emile (6 bucks a night for own bungalow). Can be sketchy if something goes wrong, I spent a long long time trying to explain to locals with boats that I would pay them to watch me, and if they see the kite go down to come and get me (1-2km offshore). Alas, I speak dick all french and I don't think they understood what I was getting at.

There's a lot to chat about here but overall it's a mad place, super cheap, good waves and safe (I think) outside of Antananarivo.

Will PM my number, feel free to give us a call and you can ask anything you like.

6 bucks a night that's amazing.

I'm thinking of doing a month there next year just trying to find out the so info apart from that that is available on the online accommodation sites.

Would you say the south was better then the north?

I enjoyed the south more than the north. But would depend what you're into I guess. If you like kiting with a few people and flattish water I'd go north. Uncrowded and waves go south.

Yeah give us a yell if you're keen.

An ex kiwi named Blair runs surf tours around there. Real helpful if you need anything when you're over there. Sorted a cheap 4wd lift from Tulear back to Antananarivo for me despite the fact I didn't actually do a tour with him. If I go back I'll be doing one. madagascar-surf-trip.com/

Think he has opened accom in Anakao since I have been there.
